portable usb is far more use for backup (mobile, quieter, less power hungry, not on all the time, less prone to infection)

Thanks closed, you're probably right, it doesn't need to be on all the time as a backup but I was hoping to use it as a media streaming source as well maybe. External NAS may be another option but they're a bit pricey. Would an external NAS be compatible with being connected directly to my BT Homehub 5? It has an ethernet port I think.

I've heard horror stories, not only online but from people I know, of their NAS array being hacked into, all the data being downloaded from it and a ransom being demanded for all their data back.

If you want speed, then a USB 3.0 card and external harddrive will give you exactly that. I'm not sure if all external harddrives do this, but my own powers down after a period of inactivity. It automatically powers back up when it needs to be accessed.

never spoke to anyone who has had a NAS hacked

if you want backup and media streaming to more then one device then it is probably the best option, it will connect to your home hub fine. If you did go the nas route it is wise to get a dual bay one and run in raid that way if a drive does fail you still have a back up
