Historical PPI on John Lewis storecard - advice please

Hello all
I'm after some advice please. Whilst having a good clear out of administrative paperwork from around the house, I've found loads of credit card statements from when I had a John Lewis store card, that later turned into a MasterCard credit card. I originally got my store card around 2002, perhaps 2003. I have dozens of statements over several years that show that I was paying PPI each month on this. Do I have a chance to claim this PPI back? I've read some other posts in the forum and it seems claims pre 2005 are not successful. I'd be very grateful for any advice please as to whether this is worth following up.
Kind regards

Well, you would have to make a viable complaint and back it up with evidence.

Its unlikely that they will have any original paperwork from that far back and the industry wasn't regulated that far back.
Do you have any original paperwork if not, and they don't either, its probably brick wall time.

You have failed to mention your reasons for complaint. So, we can't say.

2005 applies to some sales but not all.

  • Hi

Thanks for the two replies above.

I'll have to check all the documentation. There is a lot of it.

I was a student at the time and would not have been working. Is that justification for not requiring PPI?

If you were a student and not working, how did you expect to pay the credit card back, let alone the PPI
you must have had some sort of income, for them to allow you to have a card???

  • Hi McKneff
I ought to have added 'not working full time'. I would have had a part-time job around that period, or at least worked full time during summer/winter holidays for my income. Needless to say I had a card from that period and I didn't need PPI.

Are you experienced to know whether my circumstance (given the time period and card provider) would be possible to claim back the PPI? This is all my query relates to.

Why wouldn't you need PPI? How would you have paid your credit card if you had lost your job? Clearly, there is no mis-selling reason there as the PPI would have paid out in such an event.

Your complaint is also pre-regulation (Jan 2005), so the seller of the insurance can decline any complaint on that basis alone.

depending on who owns it now, they can refuse your complaint because it's pre-regulation.
You ar right though, if you were a student and woeking less than 16 hours a week, the PPI would have been useless and it's a strong complaint reason, IF you can find someone willing to be responsible for the sale.

    Who owns it now?

I agree it's certainly true that having a work contract of less than 16 hours a week would have invalidated the insurance. However, this is by no means clear from what the Op says; which has changed from "not working at all", to "not working full time" during the course of the thread.
Many students work in excess of twenty hours a week and are still "part time".

How come you did not notice it before?

Presumably you needed a brain between you ears to get onto your course.
