You embarrass yourself every time you mock my vehicle because in reality, it's not even that old, especially when you consider there's plenty of older vehicles still out there as daily drivers.     I think you hit the nail on the head really. I'm getting excellent MPG out of a car that really owes me nothing. I only paid £1000 for it, and I whack over 25k miles a year on it. After the first year of ownership, I decided every day I get out of it from then on, is a bonus... well it's still going strong. It passed it's most recent MOT (last month) with not a single advisory. I guess the MOT tester missed the death trap elements of it. It's worth nothing really. It's only value is as a work aid to me, so selling it and buying a new car is really pointless.

    If it ever did blow up or die I would have absolutely no hesitation getting another one. I reckon it's paid for itself in the amount of money I've saved in fuel economy and servicing compared to my previous car.

    Don't mind sinbad, he's got a bit of a problem with anyone who doesn't drive a car that meets his own expectations. He's yet to divulge what those expectations are, but if he pops up that he drives a 5 litre Mercedes AMG then I'll just laugh.

    I don't know the exact figures, but I have also read that more environmental damage is caused by the manufacture of a new car than the operation of the car through its lifetime. In the light of that, the so-called scrappage scheme was sheer environmental vandalism for short-term political gain.
    The scrappage scheme was a total disaster. I remember reading about some classic cars being scrapped, but also some old Volvo's from the 90s with like 16k miles on the clock getting scrapped. Mainly driven by older people, but they were traded in on that scheme. Those old Volvo's are bullet proof with 100k+ miles on, so to think they were being scrapped with 16k on is completely insane.

    To (attempt to) be fair to the (utterly ridiculous) scrappage scheme, the justification of it was very quickly re-phrased to be support for the motor industry. Which is exactly what it was always going to be.

    The problem is, where do I get veg oil that cheap nowadays? Most supermarkets sell it at the same price as diesel?
