It might help if someone can explain Gap insurance as I just don't get it. I've never taken it out or seen the need but I never took PPI either.

As I understand it, Gap insurance covers you if you have an accident and write your car off and pays the difference in value between the value and a new car. Is that right?

Maybe I'm a risk taker but as far as I can see it is only any use IF you have an accident AND if your car is so badly damaged that it is written off. With a new car that seems a fairly remote possibility to me and one I'm prepared to take rather than paying £500 premium - but obviously something the dealer is wanting to exaggerate the risks on.

The reason it seems even more pointless to me is that at the end of 3 years when the finance runs out and Gap insurance is no longer valid I still have a car that is lower value but I then have to cover that value if I crash or want to replace it. So why not keep the premium and put that towards the new car?

Have I got it all wrong? What is the real point of Gap insurance or is this the next scandal like PPI brewing?

And back to the original question, I'd also be wary about a make that is exiting. A colleague had a Chevrolet that needed water pump, took nearly a week to source the correct part and that is when they are still operating in UK. With Ford I'm sure it would have been delivered same day or next day.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

As above, the fact that the brand is leaving is probably a good thing from the customer's perspective -- GM are moving towards a model where Vauxhall small cars are made in Korea; these cars will have the same parts as the existing Chevrolets and therefore the older cars will have the benefit of Vauxhall parts prices and availability behind them.

Which engine was the car cited? The water pumps on Daewoo/Chevrolets have been shared with Vauxhall for a long time now (the engines are essentially identical).

The Toyota Aygo is also the same as the Pug 107 and Citroen C1

The Toyota attracts the idiots premium for the badge to show you've bought a Japanese car rather than a French one though.

If you must go for a Spark have a look at this thread. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/cheapest-new-car-available-chevrolet-spark-ls-saving-over-43-motor-depot-1801568

2 week ago I bought a March 2012 Hyundai i10 Active from Bristol Street Motors for £4,995, which still has 3 years manufacturer's warranty. Admittedly the manager had reduced the price of the car to reach his month end bonus. This is a much better car than a Spark, they have some at Motorpoint for £6,799 http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/VehicleSearch/HYUNDAI/I10 Or you may still be able to buy a brand new i10 Classic for around the same price.
