Credit card unknown charge, who is responsible

There must be a consumer affairs department in Tallahassee. Thanks guys for all your input.
The current status of this is that Thrifty are being extremely evasive.
They told me that the charge was for a violation.
I asked them for proof of the violation and they said eventually said (after 20 - 30 emails) that it was a toll charge and admin fee.
I asked them where the violation occured and they said a toll road in TEXAS, however I was in Florida (mainly Orlando plus one visit to Tampa for Busch Gardens)
So, I emailed them yet again to explain this and once again they stopped replying to me.
I have asked them to refund the money as the charge is obviously not mine, whenever I ask for a refund they ignore me.
Does anyone know of any governing body for USA rental cars that I can complain to as they could be doing this to thousands of people and making a mint by this fraudulent practice.
Cheers, Gary

I know every penny counts and the principal but is it really worth all this hassle (20-30 emails) and time for a charge which is just under a tenner?Swagbucks - Apr 14 - Nov 19PayPal £1745 Amazon £2285 John Lewis £170 Mastercard £3800

Yes, otherwise you are condoning every company to take whatever they want from your card whenever they want.
One way to take revenge is to leave bad reviews for them.0 -

Like i said "the principal", I'm not condoning any company to take what ever they want, but continuing a dispute for several months now and a large number of communications between the customer and the business as well as the card provider just doesn't seem worth its while.
The most hes going to get back is a refund of the charge and the personal satisfaction. Hes not going to get any compensation and even if he did, it'll be a long the lines of "a complimentary free rental" the next time hes across the pond. To me the amount in question is small enough thats its not worth my time or effort to pursue for this amount of time if i were in the OP position.Swagbucks - Apr 14 - Nov 19PayPal £1745 Amazon £2285 John Lewis £170 Mastercard £3800 -
They seem to have a dedicated department for this at http://www.thrifty.com/CustomerCare/content/TrafficTollViolationsandPlatePassInquiries.aspx, is it these guys that you're dealing with?
If they're becoming unresponsive, then escalating to head office may deliver results, or posting on companies' Facebook or Twitter pages is sometimes a publicly visible way of highlighting grievances to get them sorted.0 -
I think that's an entirely personal value judgment. To me the amount in question is small enough thats its not worth my time or effort to pursue for this amount of time if i were in the OP position.
I strongly suspect the OP wants practical help here and is fully capable of making their own value judgement about when it's worth stopping.
Personally I "suffer" with a very strong sense of fairness and feel a great deal of stress around injsutice.
For me personally I find it a lot more stressful to tolerate injustice than I do to fire off quick emails or letters (which are easy and cheap).
I know other people are different, but I'm just trying to explain that for some of us to just leave it (being robbed) would be exceptionally stressful.
Actually yesterday I chased a £5 ATOL fee on a £5K holiday because I was very cross I hadn't been informed of the cost.
I don't know how much the cost of the 15 min phone call was but I object strongly to people taking money that I haven't agreed to.
I can see your point of view about walking away, but I am very much not like that.0 -

Totally with you on this one lisyloo.
It takes five minutes to fire off an email. Maybe ten minutes to bang out a letter and stick it in the post the next day.
Whilst I do tend to place a value on my time in order to consider how much effort things are worth, stuff like this takes so little time that the satisfaction is easily enough compensation.
OP - Keep complaining to them, and don't let them get away with it!0 -
Thanks all, I appreciate all your opinions and advice.
It's not about the money, its the principle and also the fact that they could be doing this and probably are to thousands of other people.
I do admit that it gets to me to think I have been technically robbed and have a hard time letting go, but then again why let them get away with it?
I know Dollar/Thrifty will never have my business again, they have treated me as a customer with complete contempt and ignorance, but I fail to understand why they do not reply to my emails now that I have pointed out their error.
I am still looking for a Rental Car governing body in the USA to take the matter further.

And yes, I am firing emails to them all the time and getting zero responses, but I won't give up

I don't know where ''unknown'' charge is from?
It is obvious the standing order has missed the cut off day for payment , the 0% offer has been rescinded, interest has been added together with late payment fees.0
