Fiesta, low mileage but need new engine

Hi
I took my car in for its sixth year service and MOT. Although six years old it has only done 30,000 miles. I have always had my service done at the main dealer and to the manufacturers recommendation. The car had been sounding a bit loud lately (my partner described it as sounding like an old diesel engine). I had not thought much of it, however the garage rang and say I will either need a part engine or whole engine but either way it is going to be very expensive.
I am unhappy at this due to low mileage and having looked after the car. The dealers contacted Ford but Ford have said because of the age of the car they are unwilling to do anything. The garage said they maybe able to give me a 10% discount on the new engine. However I feel that a six year old car with 30,000 miles on the clock should not require such a huge repair bill. The engine must be of very poor quality and it seems to me more of a fault with the part rather than wear and tear.
However I am guessing that there is probably very little I can do about this?
Thanks
M

Want engine is it. There is a problem with diesels if you don't do many miles as emissions regulations means that they have dpf for dmp fitted. If you don't do long runs these can block up, and if they aren't cleared they can cause real problems.
If it's a petrol engine then that's different and more surprising.0 -
Thanks for your reply bigadaj. It is a petrol engine.0

Have you ever checked the oil? From your description I'd imagine not.0

So what part is it that has failed? Very difficult for anybody in the know to give you any opinions on this if you don't tell us what has actually gone wrong with the car.0

Thanks for the replies.
I have only done 6,000 miles since it was last serviced. I do check the oil about once every six months and it has never seemed to have gone down.
The garage said there is a loud knocking noise coming from the bottom of the engine. They cannot find what the actual problem is. They said they can do the service and MOT and I can keep running it (for as long as it continues to work for) or go for a new or part engine (which they are going to cost up for me and get back). I cannot really take the risk of the car just stopping working on me, so I will have to go for the new or part engine.
I am just feeling very annoyed that the engine only lasted for 30,000 miles. Surly this is not normal?
Thanks

Sounds like it did this time...Be happy...;)0 -
Have you ever changed the oil?0

I am pretty sure they change the oil at each service.0

Contact Ford yourself.
I had a similar issue with a car that had the cam belt snap at 36,000 miles, admittedly the car was only 3-4 years old but it was out of warranty.
The manufacturer agreed to pay 75% of the repair bill.
Not Ford though, but worth going direct.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -

Well, the problem sounds like main engine bearing failure, this is usually down to running dry of oil or not having it changed.
The oil filter will have a date stamped on, I would want to see this without tipping them off.Be happy...;)0
