Ok here I am again! This morning I tried to add the fax program to my comp, long story but didn't work well and after I had rebooted internet explorer and my volume icon had disappeared.
Well I've re installed IE but I still can't get a volume icon on my desktop down near the clock. I went into control panel and tried to add it to desktop but it blurted out a warning to me saying that this facility had not been installed and I needed to go to add and remove programmes to be able to install an icon on my desktop!
I just don't know what's going on. I've never lost my icon before and although I still have sound I can't control it or mute it without going through a long process of going into the control panel. Can anyone shed any light onto how to get it back.
Cheers.

Assuming you haven't uninstalled the soundcard itself you can click on Control Panel then choose sound and audio devices.
In the window that pops up here there is a check box called "show volume control on taskbar".
Make sure it's checked then click apply and OK. If it's already checked you could uncheck it then click OK, go back and re-check it as this often restores the icon to the taskbar.
Hope this helps!0 -
if that doesn't work, start, help, system restoreEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

HI yeah this is the first thing I tried to do and I get this message flash up...
WINDOWS CANNOT DISPLAY THE VOLUME CONTROL ON THE TASK BAR BECAUSE THE VOLUME CONTROL PROGRAMME HAD NOT BEEN INSTALLED. TO INSTALL IT USE ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMMES IN THE CONTROL PANEL
Anyway I went to the add/remove and I can't find any volume control programe to instal. Also I have already tried system restore it didn't do anything to rememdy problem.
All I did initially was install the Fax from windows components. the fax worked fine but IE and the volume disappeared. When I reinstalled IE the fax disappeared which I can live without but I want to be able to mute sound and turn it up and down etc.0 -

RESOLUTION
loadTOCNode(1, 'resolution');To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.2.Click Start, and then click Run.3.In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.4.Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located (generally C:\Windows): CD-ROM drive:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe
Oh dear I don't have an XP cd rom as XP came pre loaded on the computer, what should I do any ideas???
Thanks for the info by the way0 -
In C:\Windows\System32 there should be a file called sndvol32.exe. Create a copy if it exists. Then copy sndvol32.exe from C:\Windows\System32\Dllcache to C:\Windows\System32, replacing the existing version if it exists. Then try adding the volume icon. If it works, delete the copy of sndvol32.exe.
PS - sndvol32 will be shown as an Application if you have file extensions turned off.0 -

Ok I typed C:\Windows\System32 into file search and it found a load of files I don't have a clue what any of it means and I did find a file called sndvol32.exe but when I pasted it into the system32 nothing happened it said that windows did not have a program to open this file, I'm totally lost, I'm so fed up I had an icon this morning I wish I'd not tried to install the fax onto pc but I needed to send some papers to hospital urgently and now I seem to have broke the pc sigh I think I'll give up I am not literate with all this stuff it don't work for me.0

Here are command line instructions:
Click Start - Run - type cmd - OK.
In the black window that's just opened type
copy %systemroot%\system32\dllcache\sndvol32.exe %systemroot%\system32
and press Return. Type Y at the Overwrite? prompt.0 -
Ok I did the %systemroot%\system32 %systemroot%\system32 which got me a load of files come up, I've looked and looked and cannot find sndvol32, I'm hopeless at this, I keep looking scrolling up and down and just can't find it0
