Do You Lock Your Checked in Luggage?

Options
Hi
I am just about to go and buy a padlock for the bag I will be checking in when I go on hols... and my friend told me that she doesn't bother.

I was wondering what other people do?

Thanks

I don't take anything valuable. BTW if you are going to the US the lock will need to be TSA approved, if you don't want them to break your lock open.

    Yes, I do.

In some cases your insurance is invalid if you do not.

I either use TSA Locks for the USA or for the RoW use combination locks as it saves rummaging for keys. The locks are only a deterrent for pilfering as if someone wants your case they'll take it.

  • We secure our 'check in' luggage with padlocks and straps. Check your insurance.

For the USA you should not lock your luggage unless you use a TSA lock. Even the latter they will break off if they are in a hurry and don't have a key handy.

    For the RoW lock it.

Thanks. I'm only going to Europe. It is just a deterrent in case someone decides to half inch something! I understand the airport will open it if they think is necessary. There's nothing of any value in there, but think I will go ahead and get a lock. Thanks

Never bothered. Have flown on average 30 times a year for the past 11 years to over 80 countries and never lost a thing!

I ususally use a little padlock just to deter opportunists. When flying to the USA I've never bought a special TSA one and its never been a problem for me.

Totally agree with the second part of Vikingaeros post.

My father locked his case on a recent trip through Aberdeen airport. Funilly enough, the thief knew exactly where to spilt the zip on the case to steal his electronic personal organiser - yes, I know he should of put it in his hand luggage :p

X-ray specs or x-ray machine operator - I do sometimes wonder.
