Or you could just press the reset button on the router, back to factory settings and then put a new password in for your wireless network...Of course you may not have meant the WiFi password, in which case just ignore the thank you button. ;)

hi am hoping someone can help me my grandson knackered my laptop and I can't afford to repair it

Knackered it in what way ? Post some details and someone might be able to advise whether it is DIY fixable.

Ophcrack is a bit of a nause tbh, far easier with the NT Password Editor on a Hiren's BootCD

Have a read through Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, and set up a boot CD or USB Flash Drive.

that's the same one that's on Hiren's, but if you burn a full Hiren's, it's got sooooo much more as well, including MiniXP which can be a godsend when fixing machines :)

It's been a while since I worked as a techie but you can recover Administration passwords for XP, Win 7, 8 etc using a freeware program called Ophcrack. It can be downloaded from: http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php?type=livecd The version for XP is the first link. It's an iso image file that will need to be burned to a blank CD. A full pictoral guide to using the software is here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/ophcracksbs.htm Essentially you change the boot order of the laptop to boot from the CD drive first, pop the live cd in the draw and once the computer is rebooted the program will start and search for any User passwords and display what it finds, so have a pencil/paper ready. To burn the iso file to a cd you can use other free programs such as Imageburn or CDBurnerXP. Please report back here with any success or otherwise you have.
will need to get son in lae to do this for me as have no laptop to burn one just now and will get back to you thank you x

    The thread is here

Clearly you did not point your son-in-law towards it.
