How to get a job after being in prison? Divine intervention?

Scuffer, keep going, something else will come along. Have you actually told the boss why you couldn't make the team building day? Can you see what she meant by the interaction? Don't pick at the wound but do reflect on it and see what you can learn, them move on, better equipped for the next opportunity.
Speaking of which...... Debenhams.........
Good luck :TA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Hi Scuffer,
I’ve just read through your thread. Obliviously you made a mistake and IMO you’ve had a raw deal but that’s the cards you are dealt at times. You’ve got to stop beating yourself up about it, move on and look to the future. You feel that you’re getting older and not making progress, but in reality you are still very young and clearly intelligent with lots of opportunities ahead.
With that last job, maybe thoughts about your past\how people would judge you were stopping you mixing readily with your peers? Not going to the team building was probably misread as aloofness or disinterest. It might have been a different story if you had privately highlighted your financial issue with your boss, or just a comment like “I would love to come along, but I can’t afford it.”.
Ok, so you have an interest in electronics. I know it’s not quite the same thing but in your position, here’s what I would do. Contact local electricians, especially smaller one man band type operations, and offer yourself up as an apprentice with an initial trail period. Once you get yourself that type of job, you will excel and pickup the skills quickly. You could probably do the necessary reading and complete the exams without even going to college (if that’s possible), or maybe do the odd day here and there. A lot of these guys will be used to dealing with young lads who get a bit of money in their pockets, stay out drinking, don’t turn up for work\are late etc. The more mature and reliable head in these situations can be more appealing.
I don’t think your past would be a barrier to this sort of occupation. Clearly you have to be trustworthy to enter peoples properties (commercial and domestic) so if your conviction had been for theft etc, it would a different story.
Once suitably experienced and qualified, you could become self-employed and never have to explain your past mistake to anyone again. Alternatively, you could continue to study further and maybe move into electrical engineering\installation design where you’re on the job skills would give you great insight into the practical’s – this would be invaluable compared to someone who has just gone to uni without having worked in the field. You may also be able to use your past uni time as a credit somewhere along the line, or even complete your degree – organisations like the Princes Trust may be able to help.

First of all i would just like to issue my sincerest apologies to you all for abandoning my thread. After knowing i failed i was really worried about telling you all because i never wanted to disappoint you, this is why i quickly posted the update and ran away. Now reading through, i see nobody was disappointed with me and feel silly for getting myself so worked up. I'll continue with what happened after the last post.
Not getting that job took a lot out of me, i really thought i had more fight left in me but that was the straw which broke the camels back. It put me down and i think i was slipping into a state of depression. Nothing was motivating me and i didn't even want to get out of bed in the morning. My auntie was a bit worried about me and i dont know if it was her influence or divine intervention, but on saturday my mum came to see me. We talked for a good hour and i think she has now realised how much the events of the last 2 years has affected me and she is going to help me get back on my feet. She has also given me a job at her place, which i really appreciate because it will give me a chance to get back to my normal self without facing the constant pressure of failure.
Tahlullah said in a post above 'god doesn't give us more than we can handle' i do have faith and think god gave me more than i could handle and by breaking me, i now have the opportunity of rebuilding myself and my relationship with my family. They say every dog has its day and god works in mysterious ways, and i like to feel this is divine intervention coming into play to save me.
Although technically i never found a job, i still really tried and it does a little bit defy the object of the thread. So now perhaps i should change it to, how to get back in to university after being in prison?Actions have reactions,

Actually, talking to your mum again and having her support and love is worth more than a dozen jobs, in a way
Delighted to hear your update - it really feels that your life is turning around!
As for university, have you considered the Open University? When I did my degree I know there was someone at Summer School who was on special leave from prison at the time, so I can't think that they will discriminate against people who have paid their debt to societyEx board guide. Hey Scuffer. Good to see you back and on your feet. Fabulous news about your mum and the job with her. In my mind, you tried and that is what your mum saw, the same as us all on here.
It's great that you now feel able to move to the next challenge, getting back to Uni and finishing your course.
Suprisingly, you feel, however positively, that god broke you, allowing you to rebuild yourself and your relationsip with your family. I am not in the slightest bit religious, but I would still say he didn't give you more than you could handle. If he did, you wouldn't be here, moving forward and making new plans.
I wish only the best for you and hope to continue reading about your exploits at work and the fun you have getting back into Uni.
TxStill striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

I've just finished a degree with the Open University. There is no selection process as such, unlike with brick unis. If you can afford it or can get funding for it then you can study with them. The social side is missing though as there are few tutorials on most courses, although some do have summer schools.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
Well done Scuffer, great stuff :T.

Just found your thread, it's great that you got a job sorted, and even more so that you are reconciling with your mum. I'm currently doing a degree through distance, I would certainly recommend it, I can study when I want to...normally at 6am before the kids wake up! I wouldn't put it off else you could find it hard to start once you are in a routine with work. Good luck with everything :-)Formally liuhut
