Contracts should be a 2 way thing by law

I always think a 12 month contract should be a 2 way thing. I often ask ISP now that I am looking for a connection

'What about if your service falls below expectations and what I am paying for'

They always say 'You can't cancel'

I think this is wrong. If I'm paying for a service and it becomes bad or falls short of what is expected I should have the right to say Sorry you have failed and I am now leaving.

Consumer rights do not seen to figure in these contracts.

The offer 'up to' 20Mb or whatever the offer is knowing that most ppl do not get that. I can only dream of 5Mb on a good day. Stuck out in the wilds of Wales. Maybe if more people stood up and demanded a 2 way contract then things would change. I doubt it though.

Another thing that gets me is the amount of companies that have these £2.99 for 12 months offers but when you apply they always say 'Ah sorry not in your area, Its £12 for you.'

    It seems in the main that your complaint is about where you live - a fair distance from an exchange that has no LLU services. That has nothing to do with contracts at all - none of the ISPs can defeat the laws of physics and the pricing is dictated by Ofcom.

    I'm really annoyed with my estate agent and the local council - can I see hills and mountains from my windows? No! It's simply unfair!!

    Contracts ARE a 2 way thing. What gets you is the terms you agree to, probably without reading them!

    You can certainly leave if the service is 'below expectations', as long as you give the supplier the chance to remedy any defects. But which part of up to xMBps; did you not understand? That means exactly what it says.

    That's funny - I get my 120Mb service from Virgin cable, and out my window I can see hills and mountains (admittedly, with a bit of snow on top). I don't think either are contributory factors to slow or non existent broadband!

    When I moved here I checked a number of things, exchange distance, south facing garden (satellite) and cable connections. It's called 'due diligence'. Complaining afterwards it pointless, if you didn't do the homework up front!

    I suspect that many people were in their homes before there was anything other than dial up or indeed any internet at all. Others have little choice because of their work. There is a digital divide but it won't be fixed by complaining about contracts.

    Ahh forget it, you're missing the point. I KNOW that you get what it says in the small print. That's NOT what I am on about. Its the lack or recourse by the customer when it goes Tits Up

    But you are not making any valid point. You have the recourse of leaving without penalty if you can demonstrate breach of contract by the provider. All you seem to be alleging is that not everybody can get a speed of 20MBps. To repeat, linespeed is not under the control of the ISP, and the estimated linespeed is available to you before you contract.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    That is not the companies fault they do not set the OFCOM classifications.
