2nd hand iPhone

I just wanted to check what the risks are in buying a second hand iPhone 5s - it's over £100 cheaper than a brand new one. It'd be from a well know 2nd hand chain who are offering a 1 year software guarantee.
Beyond the year or if there is a hardware problem, will apple agree to repair it if I pay? (I have a feeling they won't look at phones or computers that have been tampered with by non-approved engineers)
Any other risks or reasons I should be buying new rather than 2nd hand?

I'm not a lawyer, so this is just my opinion. Don't go acting on legal advice you get from a stranger on the internet!

£100 is not really much of a saving for a larger piece of mind.
Software guarantee? What about the hardware?0 -

Only you can determine the saving is worth while, on that price of handset, I would be buying sim free and brand new, if the considered handset was say half price then for me, it would be worth a punt.0 -

I presume you are buying from CEX?
They are pretty good with regard to the phones they sell, I've bought from them without any problems, and they seem to be doing well so should be around to honour the warranty. Having said that, I bought a grade A cellular iPad from them recently and it still had 10 months Apple warranty as well.====0 -

Sounds good. And would Apple still honour that even though you're not the person named on their system?I'm not a lawyer, so this is just my opinion. Don't go acting on legal advice you get from a stranger on the internet!0 -

There is no problem with being a second owner with regard to Apple.
No one is actually named on the Apple warranty system, Apple don't care who you are, the system works exclusively off the serial number of the phone.====0
