    No need to reinstall from disk, just do a Factory Restore from the recovery partition, first having backed up your data.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    if you've moved your data to an external drive, have it nowhere else, and it fails, they're gone.

    As I've said, am not tech savvy, don't know what the recovery partition is. Can you explain a wee bit more?

    Alternatively, you can run a clean install with an up to date OEM disc.

    Situation now resolved, my recent birthday brought the gift of a new laptop - just need to master Windows 8.1 now!
