New laptop - and where to buy?

Hi all,

After 9 years of faithful use my Asus F3F (1024 mb memory, 80gb HD) series laptop is on its last legs and am a bit baffled with what to replace it with.

It's used for surfing the net, online shopping, Word documents, loading MP3 player. Needs to have dvd drive.

Any suggestions for appropriate replacement and which retailer would be best? Have PC World/Currys, John Lewis, Argos and Costco nearby - would prefer in-store purchase as opposed to online.

Thanks in advance :)

  • My personal preference is argos online. My laptop cost £439.99 came with a 2 year warranty and a year subscription to mcafee total protection and because of a promo argos had running i also got a £50.00 argos voucher.

specs wise Intel i3 or i5, min 4Gb RAM, min 500Gb hard disk. Avoid cheap HP, Advent, Compaq. Stick to Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer or Toshiba as the generally more reliable brands.

John Lewis often include extended warranties in their promotions. Visit them first to have a look, feel of what's on offer.

    Buying online gives more options.
  • I got mine from costco on line, when it broke in the 90 days there was no quibble about returning it for another one.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Worth keeping an eye on the Hot Deals forum where you can find some good offers. This is the filtered laptops page from the computer pages.

If the current one doesn't have a DVD drive, buy one and install it. If the HDD is underperforming, replace it with a larger one.

If the RAM is underpowered, install more.

What's 'last legs' about it? Why do you think you need a new one?

Having removed all photos, documents etc to external drive it takes forever to start up and connecting to broadband is slower than when I used dial-up connector.

Thanks all for replies so far, much appreciated :T

reinstall windows and it will be as fast as when you bought it, 30 second boot

Photo's and documents don't slow machines up.

Ok, so having no tech savvy at all how do I do this?

Have a wee bit of time (and a bottle of wine) to get me through this. :rotfl:

if you've moved your data to an external drive, have it nowhere else, and it fails, they're gone.
