Earliest switching opportunity

Currently coming to the end of my BT Infinity contract which is 18 months starting on 10 Oct 2012 - so I read that as meaning the contract is up on 9th April. I assume I can start a switch more or less any time now with just a month left and will get billed as normal until 9th April, or do I need to wait until the 9th April to start proceedings?

Any time you like, but say you don't want the service to start prior to your 9th April end of minimum term (not end of contract).

For good measure, contact BT saying you want to cancel from then also, and that your new supplier will be in touch.
