To move or not to Move???............ Out of London

I know someone who recently moved out of Reading as they said it's getting extremely rough. Someone was even stabbed on their street and it appeared to be a nice quite family neighbourhood. Granted this could happen anywhere but I got the impression Reading isn't the place it used to be.0

Another vote for Derby here.
Mulitcultural, good transport links, loads of schools and not a terrible place to live.
Houses are cheap as well

Surely if your husband is leaving his portion of the half to the children that money will be divided by three and places in either a trust, or bank account that each child can have when they reach a certain age. It won't be available for you to buy a house, otherwise you would have to sell your new home so your children could access their money.0

That is exactly what I thought through reading the thread. Surely if your ex agrees for his half to go to the children, that won't be for it to go you? If it doesn't go to you, how are you going to get that mortgage with funds that you don't own? Unless your ex agrees for all his half to go to his eldest and they then agree to become joint owner with you, but what about the younger children? It wouldn't be very fair.0 -
oh come to Norwich!
It's a great City, the kids can access everything, but it's fairly safe, Broads within a 15 minute train ride - beach 30 minutes...0 -
Swindon might be worth considering. There are very nice parts of it (obviously some not so nice but you get that everywhere). For your budget you'd be able to buy a nice house, probably 4 bed. London is an hour away by train, and an easy drive down the M4. Bristol, Reading, Slough, Oxford etc are all possible to commute to for work.
We left London five years ago and moved to a village outside Swindon (closer to the Cotswolds really but with the SN postcode to keep the property prices down) as we knew we'd never afford a house in London. It took me a long time to settle as it really was culture shock but it's all worked out pretty well. We bought a three bed terrace for £125k that needed a bit of work doing, I changed career and retrained and am now clawing my way back up to near my London salary, we live in an area with pretty much no crime and are expecting our first baby soon and it's a nice place to raise a family.
The hardest thing I found is making friends, which I found dead easy in London when I first moved there but less so here.0
