Sorry. Only just speed-read through this but didn't notice if anyone had mentioned him setting up a "personal hotspot" on his smartphone. Agree with the privacy stuff though - he's 16 not 6!

IIRC the BT equipment has the wi-fi codes printed on a card that is pushed into the back of the unit. It's assumed that folks with physical access to the unit are trustworthy.:(0
