should mot have picked this up?

Should this have been picked up on an mot as I only had mine done just under 2 weeks ago?
I wouldn't replace your exhaust just based on something from Google. If it is fine for MOT & emissions then I'd be tempted to just leave it until it does actually fail.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
sounds like the baffles or wadding in the silencer that is getting blown out of the exhaust
this would be a sign that one section of the exhaust is failing, and no as it is an internal part of the system it would not be picked up during and MOT which only checks the exterior of the exhaust
I wouldnt rush out and get a whole system take it in get it checked may only need one box or exhaust section0 -

Is that aimed at me? In what way was anything I said racial?

All I asked was if it was something that should have been noticed, I never mentioned compensation and if you read my other reply you would see I'm happy to return to the garage that did the mot and for them to do the repair. I only asked due to the fact I've been ripped off in the past as I know nothing about cars.
You're quite happy with the garage yet you're trying to find out if they've been naughty so that you've got something over them.. yet you're not after compensation or a free replacement?
Ok then!
If you were truly happy with their service you'd accept that things on cars do fail and you wouldn't be asking around about it. Exhausts are consumables where cars are concerned - just like tyres. Yes they do fail, yes it can happen at any time and yes it's happened to us too. We just accepted that its one of those things.
FYI whats come out of your exhaust is the wadding that they stuff in there to absorb and cancel the sound waves. Typically the exhaust pipe internally corrodes away and allows the stuff to come through with the air pressure thats coming through the exhaust. These things do happen, we had it on a 1.3 ka and we had to cut the stuff off every 2-3 days when another big chunk would come back out.0 -
Your right the "certificate" is valid for 12mths, whether your car could pass the test the day/week/mth after is a different debateNewUserHere wrote: »Actually, an MOT is valid for 12 months0 -

Some on here are rabidly negative & anti compo so don't sweat it.
As far as the exhaust goes, don't sweat that either, the hair is glass fibre wadding used part of the silencing function so over time, it will get noisier and noisier to the point that it needs replacing (or rust makes it fall apart) This is the time to fix it which might well be months or even years down the road so nothing urgent0 -
As others have pointed out it is nothing to do with the mot test.
I wouldn't ignore it - I've seen cars that will not start and exhaust box's split at the seams because the exhaust box innards have collapsed or fell apart causing a blockage. If yours is losing the sound absorption material, then something isn't right.
I'm not saying the above will definitely happen with yours but it can, and that is all the information you need to get it sorted out.0 -

Like I said, I don't know about cars or what is actually checked on an mot so thought I would ask rather than going back to the garage and asking why they didn't pick it up.
And as people have pointed it it wouldn't have been picked up I'm happy that the garage did things right.
And saying if I was truely happy then I would accept that things fail is a load of rubbish, if you just had an mot and passed and your brakes failed the following week are you saying you would just accept that it happens and not go back to the garage that did the mot?
I had no idea at the time what was wrong with my car at the time, it could have been a serious fault for all I knew, so thought I should check things out and get the facts straight before deciding what to do.S.P.C member 1662 - target £3000 -

Ok first of all if I really have got you wrong then I apologise to you (and I mean it) however we get people asking these sorts of things all the time here trying to work out if they can make a claim against someone somehow for something. The MSE forums seem to attract some twisted people who are always looking for the next scam. Like i said, if I've got you wrong then I heartily apologise.
As for something failing a week after an MOT yes it can happen. I put a car in for an MOT a few years ago and it passed with flying colours and not one advisory. The next week I was under there and found the exhaust hanging loose. It's just one of those things. Cars are machines that are subjected to a lot of debris on the road, strains, stresses, extreme temperatures etc and parts DO fail sometimes at the oddest of times. I took an engine out of one car and never touched the ignition coil but when I put the engine back in the coil had died and needed to be replaced - go figure!
Same with brakes that you mention. They're mostly made from thin pipes and metals. Metal rusts, pipes can get nipped by debris on the road being sucked up as you drive along, seals can split, cables can snap etc. These things DO happen.
The only time you can say it's not a coincidence is when someone works on your car under the hood and then something in there goes drastically wrong when they've been working on it. Those are the few times I would agree that something has been screwed up.0 -
If you don't know much about cars, you were right to ask here. It was a fair question. If you had asked how to take a garage to court because of something that failed that they should have spotted two years ago, you would deserve some criticism. But you didn't.
Your exhaust system is starting to break up internally. The wadding that is wrapped round the baffles is loose and starting to come out. It's not a major issue. Eventually, it will all fall out and you will think you are being pursued by an entire Formula One grid, but your car will still run well enough to get to a garage. Before that, it might start to break up through rust, so you need to keep an eye on it and if you get unusual noises or rattles, get it checked out. Better to get it fixed before it fails, if you can. Depending on the state of the rest of the system, you might get away with replacing just the back box.
Your garage are not at fault for not spotting this.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
