I always look in terms of how much salary we have in savings, and after our recent house purchase we have about 18 months pre tax combined salary in reserve in various savings, ISA etc accounts.

We are doing up our house and buying new furniture etc at the moment so comes in handy and as long as stays at about 1 years pretax salary I would be happy with that.

I'm going through the house buying process now and expect to have 2-3 k left by the end of it. I'll need most (maybe all) of it for white goods, a small amount of redecorating, and whatever furniture I can't get for free! (I'm getting some from parents and family friends).

Zilch. Pretty much all went. I think I probably had about £400 once the joint A/C was closed, but it went on housey stuff!

Every penny since has gone on the house too really. No savings. I'm really not a good MSE role model! I could 'find' a grand if I had to over a couple of months as I tend to spend what I've got and could quite easily spend nothing if I had to. Never been a big saver - and if I do manage it, it'll go towards something pretty quickly! Would like to replace my car in the next couple of years so really should start putting something away for that, but then I'd like to get the house finished first so it never happens!

I'm going to have enough for a take away and a bottle of cava, and that's about it!

First time I bought I had almost nothing left. When I complete on the one I'm buying now about £60k.
  • As a pensioner I have to keep at least £10,000 in savings, as otherwise there may not be enough savings for ME to call on should I need to.

At the moment (ie until I reach my Revised State Pension Age) my income is so low that there isn't any spare money, so I couldn't use spare income for anything that came up until I've reached that revised SPA.

I could easily use up literally every penny of savings I have and still not have finished this house renovation. I've just had to make the decision that the house will have to wait for any money it needs, but I haven't got until I have the rest of my income back again. So I'm doing everything I can manage from "spare" savings and will then have to Sit and Wait for the rest of my house renovation money, even though that means waiting for some things I require urgently. Darn it!:mad:

We are lucky in moving from an expensive area house-wise (Surrey/South London) to a much cheaper area (Cornwall).

The Surrey house sold for £330,000 and we have bought a much nicer and bigger house in Cornwall for £250,000, so we have substantial savings even after all the costs have been taken off.

We aim to do a bit of work on the house and buy new furniture, but we should still have a fair bit left over.

I am keeping aside 6k regardless. I can't risk my dog needing an op or having to buy a new car etc. If I spent the lot that probably would happen!!

Maybe invest more savings in to property, long term it'll give you a better return currently.

    about 40k

we could have put a lot of that into the deposit, but as i've changed job to retrain, i'm currently earning eff-all. Therefore cash is king as we're not gonna be able to save anything for the next 3 years...
