Natwest - offer - advice needed

Hi all

any thoughts on the below? difficult to keep it short!!

natwest wrote out to me saying that i may have been missold PPI and to fill in attached form if I wished to complain. I had no idea PPI had been attached to my loan and said so honestly on the form - basically saying i remember having one conversation either with natwest or egg as i took credit card at same time and was sure that i had declined it. No conversation about how it would be charged, cost etc. I don't have any original paperwork.

Now i know that is the weakest 'argument' for claiming back PPI but it was honestly the case with me - i am 99.9% sure I would never have taken it out - and certainly not if i had known how much it was costing!

Anyway - being brief - they have written today making an offer saying that although they felt a policy would have been suitable and that they are confident I did agree to it as I had signed the form I had been paying for the wrong one (single premium ppi) and should have been given a regular premium PPI therefore made an offer based on difference between the two payments.

I am still convinced that I declined the PPI! I requested copies of the loan agreements and they have said 'this is being dealt with' but none provided - should i wait before accepting any offer and check all the paperwork? where can I even go with an argument like this where i'm basically saying I can't believe I was sold anything as thought it was rejected and if it wasn't rejected by me and i inadvertently signed the form I certainly had no idea how much it was costing, I have no idea that i could have ever claimed on the PPI, what the terms would be for making a claim etc?

Is pursuing any further going to be a dead end? Anyone had a similar situation where they are convinced they declined it in conversation but bank saying that you have signed up?

HELP! Thank you!

If you're unhappy with their decision, you can go to the FOS.

They are saying you needed the poicy because you can't prove otherwise, bu that single premim was wrong, so they've said you would have chosen monthly premium and givne you the difference.

You would have signed for this, so forget anything that you might not have. You just don't remember.

  • Thanks Taff - no, I can't prove otherwise - and if the paperwork shows my signature then I must have! Can they give you a different retrospective policy - are the terms and conditions the same for making a claim should i have needed to? is this standard to say - we sold you the wrong policy so here's a different one instead? Just wondering now because could i make a retrospective claim under the policy for periods of not working....

You'll need to check the terms of the policy. If you didn't claim job seekers allowance or you left employment of your own volition then I doubt you'll get anything at all. If you can prove you were unemployed through no fault of your own, then I'd certainly get back in touch with them with regard this.
It rather depends, too, on the amount of time which has passed since your unemployment.

By the way, they haven't given you a "new" policy, they've simply refunded you the difference in cost between a single premium and a separate premium.
  • Thanks money - think i'll accept the offer. i'm just so annoyed at (myself!) how much i've paid for something I genuinely forgot I had and would have cancelled a long time ago! I'm such a tight !!!! that if i had realised the costs fully i'm sure i would never have agreed to it!
  • Just an update on this for anyone with natwest claim - couple of weeks after their redress offer they wrote out again saying they had made an error and were upholding my claim in full. Wasn't expecting it - not sure if they've decided to pull all their redress offers and give full amounts but i'm happy!
