SP and estimated use

Hi. I have an ongoing issue with me previous electricity & gas supplier Scottish Power. When I moved to EDF, I have provided them with the current readings of both the gas and the electricity, accurate on a day of a request. I expected that those readings EDF submit to SP to close out my account. When I moved to EDF, I was over £180 in credit and was expecting around £100 back as the move was early autumn so no heating bill. However, on my last bill, SP used an estimated use, and not the one that I have provided to EDF. Since December 2013, when the bill was issued, I have been on the phone to both companies to sort that out, as well I have sent a couple of email enquiries to SP, but unfortunately nothing has changed. They did not amend theie estimated readings to the actual ones. What shall I do next to get a correct final bill and receive the cash back? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. Regards Bart

It often happens that the losing company(SP in your case) disputes the meter reading supplied by the customer. It is also probably fair to say that many customers 'try it on'!
All of the companies have pretty sophisticated computer algorithms to calculate estimated consumption on any given date and if The Computer' decides there is a discrepancy it will substitute an estimated reading.
Of course it cannot take into account reasons like the house was unoccupied for a couple of months(the normal excuse;))
How big is the discrepancy in kWh and money.
You need to send a formal letter headed COMPLAINT to SP and get in writing their reasons for not accepting your meter readings. Then you can progress your complaint.0 -
Thank you. Will send an official complaint letter and then see what happenes.0

I agree with Cardew, send the letter Signed For too.
If you ever move again take photographs of meter readings.
We had our leccy meter changed, I took photo of it when it came off the wall, purely because it was incredibly old.
Engineer increased first digit on data sheet when filling out. Yeah nice try, but had photographic evidence which could not be disputed.
Made sure bill tallied when it arrived too. Still have that photo.

All my posts are my opinion, and the actions I would take.0 -
You can save a lot of hassle by sending your own readings once a month - you establish a pattern of consumption that is easy to prove. Relying on estimates & random billing is a recipe for disaster.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
