turning lights on and off

We switch off lights that are not being used and don't waste electricity, as the kids were growing up we would sometimes nag about closing doors and turning lights off to preserve heat and save on energy and only when they have to pay their own bills do they realise if you waste energy you have less to spend on the finer things in life..0

I have taught the family how to use loo paper...3 sheets...1 up...1 down and 1 for polishing.
Only trouble is I can't be sure they are doing this....the only way would be to issue 3 sheets on request....haven't plucked up the courage to implement that yet!.0 -
Hubby is obsessed by switching things off.
He's switched off the oven before because I had left it on....he didn't notice the dinner was currently in it at the time.
He's switched off the light on the stairs that I had specifically switched on seconds before to come down the stairs, causing me to misstep and slide.
He's switched off the light while i've been on the loo and while I've been in the shower.
However his best party trick was when we were both leaving the kitchen with our full dinner plates, him in front, and normally I switch off the light. Without warning he snapped out his hand behind him to switch off the light, knocking the plate of food down out of my hands onto the floor. I went ape at him.
There was no reason for him to do it. He just couldn't help himself. So to save a tiny fraction of a penny he broke a denby dinner plate and wasted a plate full of food.0 -
We've got motion sensors on the stairs - the electrician who installed them thought we were bonkers but it's one of the best things we've done with the house.
Oh, and change all your bulbs for LED ones - they're much more efficient.0 -

Hmmmph... we have this row here... my father cant understand why me and my girls use more loo roll in our bathroom than he does in his... how do you politley explain that us ladies use more as we dont have the equipment to shake n go :rotfl:
as for lights we now have energy saving bulbs throughout the house, so i can leave the hall light on at night - the only non energy bulb in the place is by my chair so i can see to crochet

Presumably you use the "non-energy" bulb because you prefer the light it gives. That would be a good candidate for an LED bulb. They switch on immediately and don't suffer from the warm-up delay that CFLs have. They also use even less power!
A 3 or 4 watt LED bulb will give something like the light of an old 60W incandescent bulb. You can choose the colour as well - "warm white" is similar to an incandescent and "cool white" is much whiter, often with a hint of blue about it. For something like crochet work, I would guess a cool white bulb would be better.
They are quite expensive (say £5 to £6) but should last for many thousands of hours use, and reduce your running cost to less than a tenth of an incandescent bulb.

My rent is currently bills inclusive and I'm still conscious of turning lights off (a habit I got into from paying the electric bill in previous houses!)
But I'm not obsessive over it, though bf has a habit of leaving lights on all nightThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Had to smile at this thread- in our house we have a thermostat and/or timer switch little game! I am the turner down culprit, growing up we were told to put on extra layers, sit with sleeping bag or blanket in front room while watching tv in evening etc
Also the bedroom window open or shut at night saga!!!
Please put my mind at rest i not the only one???!!!0
