turning lights on and off

I'm not as bad as your husband but the leaving of lights and or electrical equipment ie pc's, t.v's, game consoles on for hours on end when its not being used drives me mad, oh and chargers left plugged in!
I have now taken to fining people 2p for everything I have to turn off, my penny jar is filling up but thankfully not as quick as it was so it must be starting to sink in!I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
Oh and the bloody electric shower point, just turn it off, it's not that hard!I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0

Leaving a light burning is probably costing about a couple of pence a day
I complain endlessly about both lights and toilet paper - she uses copious amounts of both. I've changed the whole house to LED (reducing overall electricity usage by a third!), shame I can't change her behind for a more efficient one!0 -
A few lights left on and a roll of lav paper a week versus the value of food thrown away, for instance. I'd take bets on which amount was higher.0

Electric heaters? Showers? Immersion heater? Tumble dryer? Usual big users.
no elec heaters, no immersion, power shower with hot water feed.
Yes to tumble dryer, washer and dishwasher - must be them, mostly. Thanks for the thought. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
I get annoyed with my OH when we have been sitting watching TV with the light on and then he gets up and says he is going to bed, walks out the room and switches the light off. I have to say 'excuse me I'm still here'.Sealed Pot Challenge #0160

My hubby used to love turning lights off - the final straw for me was when I nipped out the living room to use the loo and came back and the light was off (tv might have been too) - I did have a minor paddy about it at that point and hes not quite so bad for it these days.....Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0

Perhaps some people's attitude to waste is such that it doesn't matter WHAT they are wasting?
I am afraid I dislike wasted electricity ( and food) too. We have a meandering house and I get frustrated if I find every light I. The house is on.
I have found before someone in one room, who says they have been in that one room ' for hours' but multiple lights upstairs and down on and all the outside lights on. If you have one of the little gadgets that monitors the usage and you calculate the amount this costs it can be aggravating over time. Similarly, I find it no bother to put an approximate amount of water for right usage for many people using the cup gauge on the kettle or a mug multiples in for tea/coffee for one or two rather than boiling a whole kettle each time.
Fwiw, I don't want to go round the house flicking off lights or getting rid of food people have bought and not eaten.
.
I wouldn't flick off a light for a few minutes, but then....for a few minutes walk though I don't tend to turn a light on often. A luxury though, of not having children's toys etc about the place.

Having gone through the CFL route, I'm now slowly changing even those to LED bulbs. Not only do they give instant light without having to warm up, they use such a small amount of electricity that it doesn't really matter if they are left on all night!
Bugbear at the moment is 9 20W low voltage halogen spotlights in the kitchen. I'd love to replace them with LED bulbs, but would have to get the carpet and floorboards up in the room above to replace the transformers (3 in all) and wire in 9 new light fittings. Would cost a lot more than I could save as well, but would just like to see it done and reduce my ongoing costs...I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
