Best alternative freeware dvd burning sorftware?

Hi folks,

I'm using nero 8 to burn dvd's but have been getting errors sometimes saying "Can't perform end of disc-at-once"

its burning the data at 16 times. Just wondering if you know any good freeware alternatives so I can try that.

I did try imgburn and though I went to their website I got warning from comodo cloud virus check there there was win.32 eyecandy in it or something to that effect. So I don't want to try that one again.

Any ideas or help appreciated.
Many thanks

ImgBurn is safe and would be my recommendation even above Nero.

    Download it from FileHippo http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn
In the top-right, select 'Download Latest Version'

FileHippo is a legitimate that many providers of freeware mirror their downloads to and from. The ImgBurn website itself is safe too, sounds like you have an overactive antivirus.

    Thanks for reply.

Seems it can no longer be depended on from comments

I'm using 2.5.6.0 and don't remember any bloatware, so maybe its only the very latest version?

Can't see if it's possible to download earlier versions from the imgburn site. If you trust them, videohelp has links to older versions.

Update: I've just installed 2.5.8.0 in a virtual xp box (so I can throw away the changes after).

At 2 points in the installation (after you choose a start menu location for the shortcut) it asks if you want express (recommended) or custom (advanced) installation. With express the default.

I selected Custom/Advanced each time. Both times, tick boxes appeared and ticked themselves saying I wanted x installed. You must untick them to avoid the bloat. Not very advanced!

Having done that, it installed with no apparent bloatware. Malwarebytes identified the OpenCandy in the installer, and a temp dll file left over from the installer, and a temp file in the browser's download cache. But not hooked into anything, so not actually doing anything, and easy to remove.

So I'd say if you take basic care during the installation there's no problem.

Prost's list shows cdburnerxp, which is an OK alternative, though a bit basic. That too has OpenCandy in the default installer, but the site has alternative downloads including OpenCandy-free versions.

Anybody worried about Open Candy could install the small free program called "Unchecky". It automatically unticks the options to install Open Candy programs.

The free version of DeepBurner is a nice and simple. It only creates data CD/DVDs or burns ISO images, but if that's all you need it's great.

I Use Ashampoo for burning and it's pretty good.
They are presently giving one of their Burning Studios free (You will get emails suggesting you buy the latest version but no hard sell)

  • +1 For Ashampoo free, but be sure to uncheck any toolbars etc on installation.
  • Ashampoo is excellent - and very simple to use.
