We have been with BT for many years for phone and broadband (Unlimited); in fact they have been our only Provider. I'm embarrassed to admit I am one of those who never shops around as it is easier to stay put with what you know. I am trying to change that by thinking of swopping our Broadband Provider as our last quarterly BT bill was £200 and this seems this is very expensive (we don't use our telephone much). Looking through other threads, every Provider seems to have it's own problems with bad experiences, hence it's easier just to stay put. I'm really just looking for some encouragement! If I can do this, I might just change to cheaper Utilities too!

what is bill made up off?
call charges? see if cheaper to be on an anytime call package or evening/weekends, if that's when you use most calls..
broadband- excess usage costs? get onto an unlimited tariff asap!
need fast connection (gaming / HD movie streaming / multi users etc)?
Fibre optic BB..
look around for comparable package, then ask BT what deals they have to match it (and keep your custom!)Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

The phone usage is £46 & Broadband £162 (unlimited). Contract runs until July I think, so should I leave it until then to haggle?0

If you mean the minimum period contract runs till July, then no point attempting haggling now.
But your OP says you have been with them "many years", so are you sure you still have a minimum contract to fulfill?0 -
If you have an unlimited tariff then you cannot possibly be paying £162 for broadband-that's £54 a month! It should be about a quarter of that.
Similarly with your phone-if you are spending more than about £6 a month on calls then you need to switch to an Anytime tariff. You are spending on average more than £15-that tariff is totally unsuitable for your usage. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
£200 per quarter?? I'm paying £220 PER YEAR!! for u/l b/band,line rental and calls...start negotiating now!!!0
