Montenegro - suggestions for quiet holiday

Bay of Kotor is definitely a good bet and Perast is very peaceful.
I had a lovely 10 days in Denovici. It's not glam but it's quiet and cheap and people were friendly.
You can visit Sveti Stefan - the small town and the beach which is lovely (but be prepared to pay for sun loungers etc) but the island itself is off limits. It's a hotel for guests only. There were security guards and a barrier when I visited in 2012.0 -
I have always wanted to go there and never considered a diy, thought a cruise stop off would be the only easy way to see it. Would you tell me who you're flying with and from which airport. Were the flights expensive. What about transfers from the airport to resorts. Sorry for the questions could probably do some research and find out but no point in re inventing the wheel IYSWIM
many thanks
regards
We're flying from Gatwick, booked with Opodo which wascheapernthan with The airline directly, and it was under £500 for both of us, which I thought was great for August. That's as far as my planning has gone so far. Had some good info here, it still looking....Bern :j0 -
Why the hell is it a terrible suggestion? Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t consider it. And what a completely idiotic reason to give about it being full of rich Russian tourists. Yes many Russians visit Montenegro as they do other parts of the med such as Cyprus and Turkey.
Those of us that know Russians know that they're best avoided on peaceful holidays. Budva is a dump, and should be avoided at all costs.
But that doesn’t stop millions of other people going to them places!! And as for Sveti Stefan being exclusive and off limits to the public? Well we got off the ferry and walked right in and went to the bar and had a coffee and no questions asked.
I imagine you weren't actually on Sveti Stefan, but rather at one of the rather less exclusive bars on the mainland. Sveti Stefan just does not allow any old plebians to go there. From Poland...with love.

Another vote for Kotor - one of the most beautiful scenes I have seen. We stayed in a rented apartment in the village opposite Kotor town (Muo) - which is actually only a short stroll from Kotor itself, but the view from our balcony over Kotor was beautiful.
Lots of nice restaurants in Kotor, bars, coffee shops, supermarkets.
When we were there we hired a car and covered most of the country over the two weeks we were there. A lot of the cost is made up of very large resorts which cater for Russian package holidays. The best comparison I can make is Benidorm is to Brits as the Montenegro is to Russians. Kotor escapes this image.0 -
Anywhere along Kotor Bay is fine, really. But I'd stay well away from Budva, Bar, Ulcinj (although Veilki Plaza is beautiful), Tivat and anywhere else along the coast.
Prcanj is also worth a shout, although not as peaceful as Perast. The biggest issue with Kotor itself is that it seems to be horrifically hot in summer, just like Dubrovnik. From Poland...with love.

You know, I'd never thought about going to Montenegro.
Being really nosy, I just looked at the hotel on Sveti Stefan. Room rates START from €550!!!!! I take it the rest of Montenegro doesn't follow that pricing?!0 -
No, absolutely not. It's a bit cheaper than Croatia for accommodation in most places. I paid something like 300 euro for a week in a beautiful apartment on the Bay a while ago, and prices haven't really risen since then. Best way to go for a Brit would be to fly to Dubrovnik and drive down. The border crossing is painless.
Sveti Stefan is a different world and nothing like the rest of Montenegro. From Poland...with love.

Agree, we flew in to Dubrovnic (easy jet) stayed two nights there (as we'd never been) and then hired a car and drove to Muo.
We had no problems at the boarder and the drive was not far at all.0 -
Thought I'd update this, just back from a week in Perast. Thanks for recommendations it was perfect.Bern :j0
