Bitter/sweet job offer :(

So I went for an interview today. It's the very job I would love in a department that I love and would mean our dream of relocating would become a reality. The opportunity for progression is very strong.
Here's the problem.....
The interviews finished at 3pm and I get a call at 3.30pm to say that they would like to offer me a job :j but there's a catch
they only had 1 position, which they have filled (I suspect it was the person before me that interviewed as she already works in the department, which is fair enough) but they have managed to come up with another position (same role) but it is only 26 hrs per week  This concerns me as we would be relocating about 100 miles for a job that isn't full time and, obviously, restricts the type of property we could move to due to reduction in wages.
They have said that they want to increase my hours as soon as possible but there is always loads of overtime going so could make my hours up that way.
This has thrown up quite a few problems....what if there was no overtime.......what if my hours don't increase....what do we compromise on with regards to housing.....IS IT WORTH THE RISK?????
What do you very helpful people think?

ok - take it bit by bit.
If you were offered 40 hours per week in this job instead of 26 hours, would you have any reservations, or would you jump at it?
Can you manage, if you have to, on 26 hours a week in your dream job, instead of 40, to begin with?0 -

Well it depends if the 26 hours still makes up a good salary? Or your husband/OH, if they earn enough to take the hours hit then go for it! But as you're relocating is this an issue too?0 -
If you claim tax credits, have you looked at how these would be affected if you earned less?0

Why is offering someone part time hours a scam? You build up holiday entitlement on every hour you work in a job, not just your contracted hours, overtime counts as well and what does pension have to do with it? Even part time workers can pay into a pension and get sick pay.0

Mel it's the NHS, no scam here

balletshoes, I have been waiting for 3 years for a job to come up in this department, I have been checking the NHS jobs website religiously for all of that time!!! I absolutely don't want to work anywhere else (the role I went for comes up in other departments at the same hospital all the time but I don't want to work there) If they offered me FT I would bite their ruddy hand off :rotfl:
If it was just me I'd be there without a 2nd thought, but I have my family to think of too, we have worked hard to get ourselves debt free and all I can see is financial hardship on a PT contract
this isn't part of the dream!! 0 -
My first job was on a 25 hour contract and I was offered overtime and the first full time job that came up in the company.0

Congratulations on this job offer, even if it isn't exactly what you had hoped for.
With regards to your dilemma over whether to accept, it basically comes down to whether you can afford to take a gamble, to see if getting a foot in the door to what could be a great opportunity could pay off. If there was no overtime available, or the hours didn't increase how would that impact you over the next few months? Do you have savings to fall back on to enable you to try this? I am a great believer in taking risks. Most of the ones I have taken have paid off and improved my life. The ones that didn't taught me valuable lessons. Life can become boring and very routine if you stay within the limits of what you are familiar with. Would you be renting or buying a property? The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
If you can manage on 26 hrs pay to start with I'd say go for it.
It's your dream job. They've told you they want to increase your hours asap and you say that the opportunities for progression are good.

Personally, if I had been waiting for 3 years for a job to come up there, I would take the job, and try and get an evening or Saturday job of some sort to make up the shortfall if the overtime doesn't come to anything, or there is a delay in upping your hours permanently.0

Are you in a role where you can join a bank/agency to do extra shifts as and when to top up the part time earnings if there isn't any overtime going?
From your level of enthusiasm, I'd have to say do everything you can to make it work, your dream job doesn't come along every day! Who knows, somebody else in the department could leave or reduce their hours at any time.0
