I'm not being offered a zero hour contract this is a post that they have, effectively, made for me (apparently they liked me lots :D )

Aside from that, good points :D

Where did I get that idea from? Working time regulations. I worked part time in a job a couple of years ago and I accrued holiday pay for every hour I worked, not just my contracted hours. When I was leaving the job I still had holidays to take and my holiday pay entitlement was calculated on every hour I had worked, overtime, not just the contracted hours I did.

The OP isnt on a zero hour contract, shes been offered a 26 hour a week contract.

Just because its part time doesn't mean its a scam.

And if you read my last post, I said holiday entitlement, not holiday pay. Yes she will be paid her contracted wage if she takes a week off work, but if she works extra hours she'll accrue extra holidays, the fact that its overtime and not contracted hours makes no difference.

person-one there is a bank I should be able to join, that's a good idea.

As for my OH, he's not in as strong-a-position as his NHS job (which he loves) isn't one he could move to as they have privatised their patient transport services (hmph). Private ambulance firms pay worse than his current job so he will also be taking a cut (he has assured me this isn't a problem with him so long as he can continue doing what he's doing).

We don't currently claim anything as our wages take us over the threshold and, as they take last years pay into account, we don't think we'll be eligible for TC.

What do you mean the job was 'made for me'.... Does this job actually exist at the moment, could it still exist in 12 months?

    Happy moneysaving all.

The point is, if you are off sick, you will get paid for 26 hours, even if you are working 39 hours (13 hours overtime) every week. The same for holidays and pension, they will only make contributions / pay holidays based on the 26 hour contract.

It sounds like you've made up your mind TBH and want people to agree with you.

I'd worry about the financial side, particularly if your OH is also going to have to take a pay cut. If you've got enough money saved to make a financial buffer, then go for it. If not, then at least consider the points people are making against taking the post.

I did think as soon as I read your first post that it might with the NHS!
The most likely reason they would only be able to offer you 26 hours is because of budget restrictions. If that is the case, the chances of them being able to offer overtime might be limited although this might depend on the actual job (ie. much better chance if you are clinical). Saying that, things are constantly changing within the NHS so who knows what the budget might be in a few months time.

Also, it sounds like you are already working within the NHS, so if it becomes an issue that you can't sustain your lifestyle working 26 hours, wouldn't you always have the opportunity to apply for a full time job in your new trust?

You sound very passionate about this job. The NHS needs passionate people desperately, so I would say definitely go for it and take it from there. You never know, the other person might have said they want the job full-time, but once they start might be happy to drop some of their hours so you can have increase yours.

Well thats really odd. Ive managed two projects over a 5 year period and dealt with staff holidays and wages so I know a bit about european working time directives. I also have family who have worked in similar jobs as sessional staff and every hour they worked counted towards holiday pay. But don't let that deter you from trolling me.

cte - I haven't made up my mind. I'm swinging to and fro constantly. I absolutely appreciate everyone's advice and none of it has gone unnoticed!!

Sassy - they only had 1 position but their actual words were 'we liked you very much and we have discussed the position at length. We have filled the position but we can fund for another 26 hours per week. We would like to increase this to full time as soon as possible but in the mean time there is always overtime that you can pick up'

I am very passionate about my job, it's a job you can only do well if you love and enjoy it. Nursing is a vocation, you do it for love not money (total contradiction lol but you get what I maen :D)

can you contact the bank you would join to see what the rota is like, how many are in the bank, how many hours you would be likely to get extra through the bank?
