Can't you just pick him up normally, and put him down, rather than by the scruff of the neck?

I don't think doing so hurts cats. I still wouldn't like to do it to my two often though.

sometimes he won't let me put my hands under him to lift him up from the chair and jabs me.

Ah right, well according to Google holding cats by the scruff of the neck does no harm :) It's not like you're carrying him around like it either

I pick my cat up by the scruff when she is hiding in a corner and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

  • The mother of kittens will carry her kittens by the scruff of the neck. The skin on the back of a cat's neck is quite loose, I guess for that purpose. So as long as you lift gently and don't fling the cat about I can see no harm. Of course if you do hurt the cat or it does not like it, then it is most likely to show you its displeasure next time you try. Cats are very well armed for vengence!

Why don't you put a cat treat on the floor then he will be rewarded for getting down

perhaps if you need a pet free area when working from home you should keep the cat out of that room. I would never pick up my fully grown cats this way. Prhaps he sits on the seat because it is warm.

Also wouldn't pick an adult cat up that way (but then mine are quite huge!).

Mine always get in a space I've vacated - albeit bed, sofa, chair...

Just put something on the chair to stop him getting on. Do you have a pen holder or something tall? You keyboard even? Cushion?

beaded car seat - cats might find those uncomfortable to walk on.

or get a second chair so that when he takes one you can swivel it out of the way and use the other.
