Well this is a strange post to write, nice but strange. On late Wednesday we received a further payment from late FIL's estate, just over £78k. On Thursday I redeemed our BTL mortgage which stood at £57,134. The rest went off our new mortgage bringing it down to just over £7k. As we now have the whole income from the BTL we can put that together with our normal monthly mortgage payment (which I've kept the same) & be totally mortgage free by this Oct.
It's incredible to think that my FIL, who arrived here from India aged 21 in 1956, with a first class degree & the clothes he stood up in, could have left an estate that would set up his wife, children & grandchildren for life. He was an immensely bright & hard working man, but faced overt racism right through to the 1980s (he had some shocking stories). Despite this he was highly professionally successful. Although none of us (inc MIL) had any idea just how well the investments he had spent his retirement tinkering with had done. Wednesday was a bit of a shocker & no mistake!
I can't believe how different our future today is compared to what it was like in Jan 2014. Then we had total borrowing of over 8 x our income (inc the BTL) & like many people felt that we were drowning a bit financially at times. Even though DW had a good salary, & we were always sensible, the cost of living is not low these days especially with children. Life is obviously going to be much easier going forward. I hope DW enjoys it more than her father did, part of the reason he left so much was that he hoarded money & didn't really enjoy it. It's the only 'compensation' (can't think of a better word) for DW losing three out of the five members of her birth family in such quick succession. She's just got her Mum & sister left now, Mum at the other end of the country & sis at the other side of the world. I keep telling her she'll always have me & the kids but I don't know if that depresses her further
We have some plans for post-Oct but I'll put them in another post another time or this one will go on forever. I actually debated whether to update/carry on posting, but I know there are nice people on here who will wish us well & may still want to hear my general [STRIKE]witterings[/STRIKE] musings on getting a fiver off in M&S with my Sparks card or similar. In fact yesterday DW teased me for pricing up those fluffy yellow chicks (the ones with the sharp red feet & demonic eyes) for kids Easter crafting - they were 12 for £1 in Home Bargains but 18 for a £1 in Poundland so we got them from the latter. Old habits die hard
Hope everyone is well in MSE-land & thanks to anyone reading xLife is changing...but I'm still Money Saving!0 -

Sad circs, but as Muser said, how lovely to be helped in such a way. Don't let it change your life though - but you could maybe stretch to another 10 chicks

Lovely if sad (& happy) post to read. Once you're MF and have the full income, visits to the other side of the world will be far easier

Thanks so much Muser, gg, Tilly, greent, I will keep posting
All you all say is true. Especially about it being far easier to get to the other side of the world - SIL (who got the same amount to the penny) is coming over next year & says she's flying business class
Those chicks are evil, their feet are so sharp. Next time I'll upgrade, I imagine you get a better class of Easter chick at Wilko :rotfl:Life is changing...but I'm still Money Saving!0 -
