Nokia 3310 - Unlocked but won't work abroad

Hi, I have a Nokia 3310 that I bought from Tesco on Tesco Mobile PAYG. I found that I didn't have any coverage at home, so I asked for a PAK code and unlocked the phone and bought a Vodaphone Sim. It works fine until I go abroad, then it appears to be barred. Vodaphone tell me it is not barred from them, so something must be barred in the phone.

Any clues?

where did you get the unlock code from?
what is the error meg? if it says restricted then it isnt fully unlocked
