Sounds like a good idea for me and my other half - but we sometimes don't both travel. Can it be used individually and/or separately (i.e. if we travelled at different times)?

LOL - I realise that, but just wondered whether there was any flexibility as my other half travels sometimes by train without me. Seems like it can't be used that way, but was worth investigating :)

Yes unfortunately it is only for 2 people who travel together, and the card has 2 photos on it, however:

    * It can be any 2 people nominated to share 1 card, it can be a friend for example. It seems to be considered likely that some regular travellers might want to share a card with one friend and then another card with another friend, though that means forking out 2 x £30 to do so.
    * Young person's, Senior and Network railcards are also available for single travellers which can cut the cost if you're 25 or under, 60 or over or are happy to just get a discounts in the (broad) south east area, respectively.

I'd like to see a frequent travellers card available to all - even if it cost well over £30 it would still save a lot of people money - but this does not seem to be on the radar at the moment.

Meh. Too restrictive, Most of the times I travel with my Wife but occasionally with friends, this adds nothing better for us to keep a Network card and if we have to travel outside the network area see if it's worth while.

I realise we are lucky that the network card exists and we can use it, but a nationwide type network card would have been far better than this.

So anyone know if the main booking sites picked it up yet? Thetrailine, Redspottedhanky etc?

...and the discrimination against single people continues unabated.

Explain again why they can't just offer a national railcard that anyone can buy? No need to admin the old age or forces requirements, no need to deal with groups, just providing an incentive for off-peak travel to increase revenue.

I've heard murmurings they're trying to kill the network railcard too. It's madness, utter, utter madness.

Sorry, typo. I meant to say GREED.

To answer my own question...yes, thet trainline offer it as an option.

Mr_jrt. It's not for couples necessarily, just two people who travel together (I realise that will often be couples).

Seems like a fair deal and amongst other things it's a way of getting people out of their cars.

It's targetted at pairs of travellers because car travel for two is usually more economical than two train tickets. The discount might tip the balance back towards using the train.

This should work well for me and my partner.

The only downside is the single journeys at full price still, but then it has been that way anyway, so any saving is better than none.
  • I have been waiting for a card like this for years - my husband and I penalised for not being young or old but simply middle aged and big train users. I just purchased the card, and saved immediately £70 on a return journey with Virgin Trains. This is going to be a massive bonus for us, and will certainly encourage us to use trains even more. Hurrah!:j
