Windows 8.1 - Helppppp!!!!!!

Ignore W8.1 crappy mail - just install WLM as suggested many times. So currently I have a lot of emails stored in various folders within windows live mail on Windows 7
The "folders" to which you refer. If they are "remote" (ie not on your computer) then you will see them again under W8.1 - you do not need to change anything.
If the "folders" are local (or personal folders) in W7 then yes, you may have to copy mail from W7 to W8.1
Best to install and configure WLM on W8.1 then report status... (I'm back in an hour or two).0 -
There's no default email client on W8. If you don't like the Metro interface, just put Classic Shell on it and it will look much like W7 once again. No free lunch, and no free laptop

There's the default Metro/Modern client on Windows 8, but no desktop client.
Windows 7 didn't come with a desktop email client either, so the OP must have put WLM on it, or it was bundled by the manufacturer.0 -
I Have got WLM installed and partially up and running, I can receive but not send emails, despite copying the details accross from those on the Win 7 laptop. So at least I am now starting to get somewhere at least and I think I can work on the not receiving side.
I will have had this laptop for a week on Wednesday and so far I have not managed to anything but try to sort out email and web browser which I have put a seperate thread together on.
I really do not know why they had to change so much and make it so difficult to follow and work out. I have never had problems like this before and I have had every single version of windows over the years.
Thanks for all the help and patience;)0 -
Are all your (email) folders present and correct?I Have got WLM installed and partially up and running, I can receive but not send emails,
Your send problem will be a config issue.
Unless you've been living in a box for the last couple of years you should have been aware that Windows8 had a couple of "issues"? Only joking - but it sounds like you are persevering.I really do not know why they had to change so much...
PS. if you haven't installed ClassicShell yet I suggest you give it a go.

I think I will be downloading the classic shell you have recommended in due course.
I am going to check all my email settings and make sure they are all the same, as on the Win 7 laptop but I thought I had copied them all over correctly.
I have to be honest though and say this whole Windows 8 thing has completely thrown me and I need to climb down from the ceiling. It just seems like one thing after another.
Re the browser, it seems I have some sort of adware program called trovi that has got onto my system. the first thing I did was get Kaspersky up and running so it has obviously sneaked past or was already on here.
I know these things can be a real problem to get rid of, so I am actually thinking the best way forward may be to reinstall to factory reset and start again from scratch.0 -
Don't just copy the email server addresses, check what they are for your ISP and enter them accordingly. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I don't think the standard 'Download Classic Shell' is the answer to everything with W8.1. Granted it helps it to look a bit more familiar, but doesn't always make it faster or better.
I have Modern Mix and StartMenuX loaded, but find that the more I use the Windows 8.1 start menu the easier it becomes and the quicker I find things.
It is worth learning how it works even if you end up not using it much/at all. There are plenty of 5 minute tutorials on the web. Personally I find the hybrid of the two combined, works out perfectly.;)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Perseverence and a lot of swearing finally paid dividends, as well as tking on board a lot of advice on here!
Email is now fully functioning sending and receiving via WLM. However I still need to import the emails and personal folders from the Windows 7 laptop. One step at a time............
The whole scenario for me amounts to Win 8.1 is great if you are used to using touchscreen and making your way round tablets etc. I [refer the older approach of a mouse and clicking, which I don't really think it is the most user friendly towards. It would also have helped if I had known a lot of things were still there, just named differently. It might sound stupid but I didn't get the "this PC" instead of "my computer" which I have been using for the last 15 or more years. Some direction might have been useful with the laptop in the form of physical paper that you cn read and follow. Yes its old hat and 2014 but for some of us, it still works!
The issue with the email was the server bits like smtp.tools.sky.com. The tools bit was missing, I added it and it worked a treat mail in and out!
That took me 2 days to resolve in total. At least I got it in the end though.
So email put to bed and thanks for the advice, anymore tips on anything Windows 8.1 will always be gratefully received.0 -
IMO the best way to approach Win 8/8.1 is to think of it as Win 7 with a bit tacked on that you can get to grips with at your leisure if and when you like.
Yes the navigation is a bit different, and I don't like 'This PC' either, but by and large the desktop part is unchanged from Win 7, and it runs the same programs, in the same way.
