What would Historians, I wonder, make of our social lives in 2008? .....

-In our home, we enter an internet chatroom, to talk with someone from Texas, that we've never met before, and that we'll never meet again;
- On-line, we check into Second Life, to interact with virtual people;
- On FaceBook, we catch up with what our current friends are doing;
- Friends Reunited allows us to catch up with friends from our past...

And the person living next door to us is doing exactly the same! Do we even know their name?

Time is short in our busy lives. We rush home on a crowded train, discretely avoiding eye contact. That woman in tears is probably suffering from an allergy, so we can appropriately ignore her.

Evenings at home, we watch Eastenders and Corrie and feel we are interacting with people and having a relationship with them. It's real life, right?

In 1978-82, a friend of mine used to spend Sunday afternoons at Speakers Corner. A regular speaker on the soapbox was a primary school teacher called Paul, who would speak of his vision of the future where everybody, especially the young would no longer go out and get involved with people. Instead, people would be sitting behind computers all day, using them as a way of talking to others.

Most who stopped and listened to Paul laughed and ridiculed him. They thought he was completely mad.

Why are we able to be more honest hidden behind a wall of technology?
What are we scared of?

I wonder what Paul would be saying now.....

- steph - I'm also sorry to hear that you've been so poorly, hun. Don't mess around with it steph - get down to the drs and get it checked. Please don't take any meds that were given to you before your implant angel - you don't know if it could affect you adversely and it's always best to check with your dr first hunnie.

- dawnylou - how are you hunnie? I was thinking about you and your visit to the dentist. They shouldn't be allowed - - sorry toothsmith!

Surely it still hurts today as it much as it did when someone went a hundred years ago?! Just kidding guys - there's some wonderful ones out there, honestly.

First of all angel - CALL THE POLICE NOW! Take photos of your bruising and write down an accurate account as a record. There is never an acceptable excuse, imho, for anyone to physically - or even verbally - attack anyone else, male or female! And the fact that this was your brother steph, makes it worse, I think.

Now I know I don't know you, or all the ins and outs of the situation, so please forgive me hunnie, but

shouldn't have even been a question. It's a dangerous game to play and shouldn't even be thought about. I say this because you never know just how far someone will go if they are out of control - as your black eye and bruises will testify. Tell the police now and as well as stopping the physical violence, there will be an official record of his threat to damage your new car once it arrives.
No-one needs this kind of behaviour in their life, steph.

morning all, feeling rubbish today, really down, the dark horrible weather isn't helping either. wish it was summer, i like the sun.
wish i had some friends in real life, so lonely doing everything alone, the only person who says they wanna be my friend in real life is my ex, and friends like him i can do without.
steph, i agree with tiff, i would report your brother to police, with photo's as evidence, who knows how much further this could go, and you dont deserve it hun.
sf, how are you today hun?, must be so hard for you right now
