This will be complicated...

My gf has just started a job thats 2 nights a week in a care home, it will be different nights each week so we have decided to live together so i can stay at hers and look after her kids at night. Its her first job in 10 years so is really excited. Problem is at the mo im not down as living there. I dont live anywhere permi8nantly enough. I also dont work or claim any benifits. I have no idea what to do as her rent and loads of other things are paid for, but she believes we will be lots better off when she is working, well for 22 hours she will be aboout £20 better off, but she just wants to work.

Is there anyone that will be able to help or ask the right questions so i know what info to provide.

I have understanding family. Is that relevant?
  • Well, she'll have your contributions into the household budget to allow for as well now you'll be living there.

She has just signed off, we are looking into housing benifit and she has 2 kids, so i think she gets something for them too.

She will need to declare to any benefits she is claiming that she was a partner.

One difference this could make is if she is claiming working tax credit, as a single person she is entitled to this when working 16 hours. As a couple it's 24 hours.

Re you not claiming benefits it could be relevant if say you didn't work because of a disability.

What you need to do really depends on what benefits she claims

Does that mean she has to work at least 24 hours a week? To claim working tax credit.

for a couple it is 24 hours between you with one person working over 16 hours, so either she needs to have an extra couple of hours or you could get a job for a few hours a week

I really wish i could get a job for a few hours a week, as i was used to working silly hours in care. I dont sign on as i had been sanctioned 4 months in a row and I just didnt know what else to do, so i`ve been selling everything i have and asking family to help where they can. 5 years being unemployed is never good.

Why have you been getting sanctioned?

It was one think after another, Couldnt acces the job thing on the internet as i lost the password, applied for jobs but it didnt turn up on their system. Didnt have money for the bus so missed an interview. I just stopped signing on as it was costing me to much. And i think it was the same day the woman behind the counter, if you needed money foir the bus you would have found it somewhere. You name it, i stopped signing on in November and my mental health has improved a lot.

If you have been unemployed for 5 years then you would not be able to receive payment for JSA as part of a couple as you will not have the NI contributions required for CB based and your partners income will be too high for any payment for income based
