Fully comp is the way to go, as others have said, but I am not sure if insurance group is the only factor in prices. I had an MGF 1.8vvc insurance group 30 which cost less to insure than a 1.6 zafira club inusrance group 13! And this wasnt using classic insurance and was both with the same insurance company! the MGF was about £100 a year less than the zaffy!
So if the insurance categories are misleading, what is the definitive measure? This seems to think that it's the categories.

To be fair, it does say *TYPICALLY* the lower the insurance group the lower the insurance. All I could think of is the MGF was a 2 seater the zaffy was 7, so potentially the liability could be higher in an accident. But that was just a guess - I really dont have a clue why to be honest :rotfl:0 -
I get people coming to me all the time that have spent all their money buying a high maintenance car for what they thought was a 'bargain' price. Right up to the point they find out that the next service it is due is a major one and is going to cost them nearly a grand in parts plus my labour charge.
"But I can't afford that" is a phrase I hear quite often and they go away.
Being able to afford the purchase price is only the first step.0 -
I'm 28, successfully self employed, live alone in central London, eat out regularly, can afford most things I want. I passed my driving test first time (PM for recommendation!) but I'm finding that I can only afford insurance on the most mundane group 1 cars. Even that is eyewateringly high at £1387 to insure a Fiat Panda...but on a Mini that goes up to 2000 and above.
I'm not a teenager and I can afford a nice car befitting my age and demographic, so I don't want to be limited to crap drives. Is there any legal trick I can use to get the insurance down - for example, membership of a union or owner's club, that would get me a more sensible quote? Would a smaller broker be better than these large firms?

Since the OP has bothered to dig up this entire forum, perhaps the OP could go onto MSE's quite useful tool for finding out how one CAN lower one's insurance?

With all the online comparison sites it really isn't that difficult to try various cars.
You may find that it is cheaper to insure something like a BMW 5 series than a Micra. Certainly for me the category ratings made no sense in relation to premiums. Insuring a 911 was the same price as a VW Golf Diesel.
Another option that apparently is cheaper to insure is something like a Toyota Hiace cab. Maybe it still counts as a crap car for you but if money is a problem then it may be cheaper to do.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
There aren't really any 'crap' new cars around these days; the bad marques have been mostly weeded out. You may have to put up with a modest motor for a couple of years until you build up your no claims history, and then go for something flash.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
