Might be worth looking at classics in your situation.

There are plenty of "interesting" - and perfectly capable - cars out there at reasonable prices as long as your definition of "interesting" isn't limited to speed.

Depending on your tastes, rubber bumper MGB's can be had for £3 - £4k in decent condition, or go earlier and get tax exemption with something pre-'73 ;)

Have a browse round http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/cat/3/ and see if anything takes your fancy, then run some dummy quotes with specialist brokers like Lancaster, Footman James or Carol Nash.

Have you only just passed your test?

You don't need to live at the same address to be on the same car insurance. My parents have me on their insurance so i can drive their car but I don't live with them.

One of my neighbours claims it costs less to put her 19 yo on the insurance for her husband's new BMW than her own ten year old compact.

I've heard rumours (no idea of their truth) that since the insurance companies have had their hands tied with regard to customer profiling (i.e. they can't take account of the fact that males are higher risk), they are now profiling cars instead.

So don't limit yourself by insurance group...get some quotes for more desirable cars instead. Worth a try, anyway.

Thanks. My information regarding cheapest cars to insure are actually the "group 1" category as listed on Parker's.

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/insurance/car-insurance-groups/?ig=1

So unless that category only tells part of the story, it looks like I'm stuck.
The category only tells part of the story. Try quotes for a Volvo.

They started profiling cars decades ago

And not always in ways that are immediately obvious.

Posh expensive model with a low accident rate (because the owners care) does not necessarily cost more than something cheap and cheerful that teenagers wrap round lamp-posts every Saturday night!

That seems to be the big factor in cheap classic insurance (which often completely ignores your age, driving history etc as long as your licence is under 6 points for speeding) - the owners tend not to crash as often!

You do get a small discount from some insurers if you get your"Pass Plus" - it's an extra hour or two driving lesson to get one. But the discount is only 5-10% so not huge.

Ford Fiesta, VW Fox and Skoda Fabia tend to be cheap to insure and I wouldn't describe those as "crap" - they're not Ferrari's but not terrible.

    Try these:

Get some quotes on Ford Ka's or Nissan Micras - the car the 17 year old boy racers don't drive and don't get stolen to be broken for spares. Been looking at these for my 17 yr old daughter and they seem to be a lot cheaper on the insurance.
