Redundancy, PILON, JSA, P50 and Tax

I am hoping someone can help me as I am very confused about my tax. I started a new job recently and think I am due a tax refund, but am not sure how it works.

I was made redundant in June 2013. For the 3 months to June in current tax year I earned £10,792 and paid tax of £1,803. I received a P45 with this on it.

A month later I was paid Pay In Lieu of Notice (PILON) and some outstanding holiday of £11,693. Tax code was 0TM1 and tax deducted was £4,143. This payment was not on P45.

I them claimed JSA for 1 month and received £284. They took the first P45. I stopped claiming and received a second P45 with no figures on it, Just a 944L Month1 code.

After that I had no income for 6 months. I submitted a P50 but was told variously that the Benefits Agency would sort out any refund. Then that my JSA claim was still showing as live, and finally that my new employer might pay refund. All my new employer has is the P45 from JSA which has no cumulative figures on it, only a 944L Month 1 and a tax code.

Will the tax all come back to me eventually automatically? My P50 claim just died and I'm working again now.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Chris

As you have handed in the P45 your new employer will advise HMRC that you are now with them and in theory a tax code along with previous pay and tax details will be sent to them so that any tax rebate that may be due can be made to you by your new employer. as we are getting near to the tax year end this may not happen quick enough to get it sorted, if it is not sorted by then I would suggest contacting HMRC after the tax year ends. Might even be worth contacting them right away to see if sending the details for your new employer can be speeded up.
Regarding the late payment that was not on the P45 before the real time system came in this would not have been advised to HMRC until after the tax year end so would have needed to have been sorted out then. With real time system this may no longer be the case so might be included in the adjustment if it goes through before the tax year end. Cannot say one way or the other as no longer directly involved with PAYE. If it is not sorted then you are back to claiming after the tax year end.
