A true 34A would measure approx 34" underbust and 35" bust - if your measurements are significantly different to those then you might find that there's actually a more suitable size for you, which could open up some other options in terms of brands. If you do think you might be more suited to another size then I can point you in the direction of some good websites :)

Shock Absorber are good and it looks like they do have some options that could fit you - this and this come in A cups.

Most brands dont seem to use this modern way of sizing yet. So for a 34'' back size you'd be measuring 29/30 inches under the bust and 35'' around the bust.

Actually, all brands fit pretty much the same. It's the fitting advice that is outdated. The way bras are manufactured has changed over the years but the fitting advice/measuring techniques haven't changed to match it. Any 32 band bra should comfortably stretch to around 32". My underbust measures about 27" and I very comfortably wear 28 band bras - the usual fitting method adds 4" and would put me in something like a 32E which wouldn't provide anywhere near enough support - even 30 bands ride up my back. Slowly more and more bra boutiques are advising about better fitting techniques - Bravissimo is a great chain that advocates for better bra fitting!

Someone with a 29" underbust and 35" bust would most likely get far better support and shape in a 30DD.

It's all personal choice of course, but I don't know any people who have been 'converted' to better bra fitting methods who regrets it :)

(Admittedly Shock Absorber bras are known for being very tight, so probably not a good one to start with, haha - the cup being too small can also affect how tight the bra feels too. I still wear a 28G in my Shock Absorbers but I do know a lot of people who prefer to go up a band size for that particular brand)

I had this problem a few months ago and ended up with this:

I've since bought a few as I've been really pleased with it.
  • I noticed Primark had some sports bras at the weekend. Had a reasonable range well priced, may be worth a try :)
  • Primark's Rock Solid! bras are quite good, though I had to stitch the straps in place so they didn't loosen. Plus they only go up to an F-cup, so a bit of squidging required from here lol!

    Are you 100 % sure that you are really a 34 A ?

What dress size are you ? if you are any smaller than a size 16 I'd question that you actually measure at a 34 back size !!

Measure underneath your bust, firmly, in inches. The tape measure should be pretty tight . This will be your band size

Now for the cup size !!

Bend over so your boobs are hanging down at 90 degrees and measure round the widest part

For each inch difference between your band size and your overbust measurement, you get a cup (starting at A) - so somebody measuring 30” underneath and 34 over would be a 34 D.

You may get quite a shock as you’ve probably gone down 2-3 back sizes, and up several cup sizes.

    My friend swore blind that she was a 36 B (M&S fitting)turned out she was actually a 30f !

totally disagree with this. I am a size 12 top (14 if it is tight across the shoulders sometimes or I want more length in the arms). I have tiny boobs. I am a 36AA - would probably be a AAA if anyone made such a thing. With very small boobs bending over at 90 degrees would give a very misleading figure as there would be so much air between the weeny cones that would get included in the measurement. Even in a 36AA I have to have it set on the furthest out eyes or it simply won't reach round.
I have a Sportjock Action Sports Bra, Bra Size - 3. Medium for 32 - 36 inch but it is quite snug and can be a challenge to get out of :)

I spent years wearing a 36A or 38AA on the basis that no bra seemed to fit, I had to have the bra done up on the loosest fitting to get it round my back and there was still space in the cup. Bras were uncomfortable, riding up, straps falling down etc. Using the old style of measuring (measure back, add 4/5", measure bust and subtract to give cup size) I was in the right size. Anyway, I went into a different underwear shop and was measured again, I'm a 34-36 C/D depending on style! The actual size is not the issue though, it's the fact that I feel so much more comfortable, bras fit better, no backfat, no space in the cups etc. That's a long way of saying you might want to try Nottslass's suggested method.

Back to sports bras - I got a couple of crop top style ones from Primark. at £4 each they've been a bargain, wash well dry quickly etc..

I'm resurrecting this in the hope of further advice.
I have so little up top I don't normally bother with a bra but am now starting couch to 5K and there is slight wobbleage going on! I'm quite small - 5 foot and 71/2 stone so do they even make them that little?
So I'm looking for a) how do I work out my size as I've never worn a bra in my life and b) is there any where high street wise I can go to try one, as I don't want to be faffing around sending things back when I get the size totally wrong. I had a quick scoot in sports direct but they seemed to start a B cup and I'm certainly less than that. I've also looked in m&s and debenhams but couldn't see anything sports like, although I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for anyway.
Also I don't want to spend lots until I'm sure I'm going to continue - I can spend a bit more when I know it's going to be worthwhile.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
