Our initial thoughts were to get a 36kw wood burning stove with a back boiler put in the lounge, ... we would also need a boiler to heat the water in the summer months,
Or an electric immersion heater, possibly using off-peak electricity.
Would solar for the hot water be possible - not using a heat pump but directly heating the hot water cylinder. Initial costs can be quite low if you ignore RHI and MCS accreditation and just DIY or get a builder to do the installation. And most effective in summer when you won't be using the wood burner.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

That's what we do, ancient sprawling pile with ASHP & Fancoils in Scotland.
Heating & hotwater < £1000 pa. But we do have solar PV so on sunny cold days like today the heating runs for free :-)
Cheers
EDIT: Oh and have a couple of log burners, one used regularly the other occasionally. I was apprehensive about putting this sort of technology into an old choc box railway station but it's the best thing we ever did. Check out TiredGeek's ASHP system in an old house too. Amazing setup

If you're considering wood burning stoves the concerns you have about gasification boilers apply equally – the energy density of wood is the same regardless of where you burn it.
With a gasification boiler, you would ideally have a thermal store so that you could load the boiler once a day and batch burn. Most people do this late afternoon/early evening. There's sufficient heat in the store to last 24 hours unless it's very cold, in which case you start another batch burn first thing in the morning.
Yes I've looked into wood gasification boilers at some length, the problem is the 11 tons of wood per year, a couple of small 5-7kw stoves running intermittently would consume no where near that amount but we could utilize the three tress which are being removed and our coppice wood which is already good for cropping. All be it next year+ as it all needs seasoning. That and as you mentioned the 1-2 times a day I would need to load it.
I think the thermal store is a great idea, but it depends what solution we settle on.
thanks again

Out of interest, what size is the house m2 and what size heat pump has been specified, as you say it is commercial?
TBH, the borehole is no more efficient than a horizontal system, but at a much higher cost.As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -

How much was the outlay for the airsource pump, fancoils, solar and woodburners. This kind of setup would be ideal, but I don't think the funds would streach that far, at least not yet. We are at home most days as I work from home and we have a young family so the tempeature would need to kept be kept at 17-20 degrees for most of the day.
Do you have a link to tiredgreeks setup? I would be very intrested
Thanks

We have economy 7. So the immersion coils in a termal store to supplement other boilers was an idea early on in our thought process, we couldn't find any figures for running costs. I've have wondered about diy fitting solar panels, its 50/50 them letting us have them in the garden, due to the listings.
Thanks Jon0 -

My understanding it is more efficient as the water flowing in an aquifer is higher than the ground temp by a few degrees. I'm no expert but I have read about it in a few places. Wether its necessary is another matter.

Blimey, that all looks insanely complicated, I've fully replumbed a few properties, but that is something else.
