Is Paypal unfair

In February I sold an item, and the buyer then left positive feedback saying he was pleased with the goods , excellent service etc. 36 hours later he contacted me saying the goods were broken when they arrived. I was sure they were perfect when they left me, but offered him a refund of the cost of the item if he returned it to me to check. He was not happy with this and wanted me to also return postage and the cost of postage for him to send it back to me! When I refused he reported me to paypal. After approx 8 weeks, paypal ruled in his favour and said I should refund all costs including postage. Even when I explained he had already left feedback and it was 36 hours before he advised the goods were broken they still insisted I refund the costs. During the time the decisions were being made my paypal account was restricted meaning I was unable to sell on ebay. This seems very unfair when I know the goods were working when I sent them. What do others think? I have since received the item back and it is in fact damaged but I still maintain this was done by the buyer.

What was the item? If it was something like a teapot then obviously they've broken it themselves but something like a mobile that could have been faulty already is more difficult to prove.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D
  • Hi,

It was a portable keyboard, but it was tested and fully working before I sent it. I realised it would be difficult to prove, but did at least hope for a half way settlement as he could not prove it was not working when I sent it. I feel very let down by paypal, especially in view of the fact the buyer had contacted me , saying he had received the goods and thanking me and also posting positive feedback saying he was pleased with them!

Yep I'm inclined to agree Paypal AND Ebay are equally unfair and are quickly going so far down in my estimation that I'm starting to think of them in the same light as estate agents and insurance companies!

Yet another example of the criminals getting off scot free and the innocent paying the price. I know that is a bit over dramatic, but it just shows the way in which Paypal and eBay work. With eBay, I have had auctions for genuine software cancelled and warnings issued whilst others are selling dodgy £500 software for a tenner. Thankfully, I haven't fallen foul of Paypal yet or any awkward buyers.

Regarding the feedback system, I have now taken a different attitude to it. Normally when I receive something in the post I open it up and check it looks OK. (Most of the stuff I buy is computer related, so it needs to be fitted to check if it works). In the past, I would have then gone to eBay and posted my feedback, but then only discovered later that the goods were faulty. Now I don't post the feedbak until I have checked the goods out (I have had a 300GB drive at home for 4 days now. The feedback won't go on until I check it out at the weekend.

I know it's too late, but did the buyers feedback state the keyboard was working or just that he was pleased? It might just be a case of someone not liking what they got and breaking it so they could get a refund.
