Buyer on ebay - wrong address

Just want to have a rant really at the unfairness of it. Sold an item on ebay, buyer says never received it and opened a dispute on Paypal, Paypal refunded the price paid to buyer. I had proof of postage so sent a claim in to Royal Mail. Royal Mail said the address was incorrect - didn't exist - so I don't get any compensation. I used the address as listed on Paypal (and I am meticulous at copying the address correctly) so it wasn't my fault and yet I am the one out of pocket. Very, very unfair.

Royal Mail is nothing to do with Paypal.

So, if the address isn't on the RM database they won't pay out.

If the address is incorrect, report the buyer to Ebay and Paypal.

I don't understand your point. The OP hasn't said anything about them being connected?

I have pointed out that RM are nothing to do with Paypal. It's immaterial where the OP took the address from if it isn't valid.

    Why should RM pay out?

Or do you think they should?

It isn't RM's fault the OP used an non existent address is it?

People assume if the address is in Paypal then that's all they have to do.....
  • Maybe it's RM's fault and they need to update their database?

When I post something via RM, normally my proof of purchase has the postcode on it and says validated with an N?

OP have you googled the address to see it on maps/streetview?
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)
    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

There used to be a library building belonging to a major UK university whose address and postcode did not exactly match the RM database. I know because I lost a recorded delivery claim for loss as RM said the address was wrong.

Uni was using headed paper, all the literature and online showed the address that I used- RM disagreed with one part of the post code which according to the lady I spoke to at the Uni put the library in a completely different part of town.

However, RM had changed the post code on them and as far as RM were concerned by not using the new postcode allocated they were using the 'wrong' address.

Royal Mail, like any carrier will use their own database. If you opt for an address that isn't on it, then you can't cry when they don't compensate.

Given ebay/paypal perform no address validation, how is the seller supposed to know they have been given the right address?

I've been given addresses without flat numbers, addresses without house numbers, wrong postcodes, postcodes with no spaces, old addresses.

I sell 50 items per day - I don't have time to manually check each against the RM database. The buyer has to make payment and provide the address. If they can't get 50% of their duty correct, what are we supposed to do?

Same here, the only ones I ever check are the obviously wrong ones. Like one I had a few months back- basically it said something like 'Bob at Warburns' Darley Heath Derbyshire. I contacted the buyer and he gave me a completely different address which as it was a cheap item I just used to post item out.

    This is my point.

As there is NO verification a good seller SHOULD do this. Ultimately it is the sellers responsibility to get the item to the buyer. Have you read the address problem thread on the PS board?

I sell more than you, and I DO validate every single address! I use RMDMO and it's done as it prints the label.

There is no way I would send 5, 50 or 500 a day without it.

If you are sending that volume (50), then it will be in your interest to switch your OBA to DMO.
