Moto G: can't hear incoming call!

This must be one of the stupidest problems imaginable for a "smart" phone!

When I get an incoming call, and answer it, I cannot hear the caller unless I turn the speakerphone on. I've been through all the Settings I can find, but cannot find anything which relates.

Would be grateful for any clues...!

PS Yes, the Volume Control is set to (almost) maximum...

If the volume is definitely almost set to maximum for the in-call sound, this would suggest that you have a faulty handset. If it's one of the Tesco ones, just take it back and they'll probably do a straight forward return and refund etc.
Only problem is though - if you unlocked it - then this code is valid for this handset only - so you'll need to buy a new code when you get your new handset's IMEI.
If you're going to return the handset and you did unlock it - probably best not to mention it...although I don't think that the Tesco staff care one way or the other - but best not to take chances!

Thank you! It does seem to be an odd problem, since the speaker seems to work perfectly well otherwise, and it's just installed the post-KitKat update...

One tiny thought: could you say precisely what you mean by "the in-call sound"? Are you referring to the button just underneath the power-off/on button (which is what i meant by Volume Control), or to an internal setting?

A further thought: I've been looking through the manual and find
"Volume: to set volume, just press the volume keys on the Home screen (ringtone volume), during a call (earpiece volume)"
However, I cannot find any diagram to show what is meant by this - and of course nobody is ringing me at present so I cannot see what actually appears on the screen!

Hi John - you've got it exactly right.
The rocker switch at the side of the handset. When you're not on a call it will control the ringtone volume - or - if you're watching a video or playing a game etc., then it will control the media volume & (you've guessed it!) when you're on a call (not using the loudspeaker) it controls the in-call volume.
So - next time someone calls you - try turning the volume up, and see if this makes any difference. The handset isn't noticably louder or quieter than any other handset - so again, I would say that if turning the volume up while you're on a call and not using the loudspeaker - then it could be a faulty handset.

I've just tested my Moto G and when in a call, if I adjust the volume up/down I cannot completely mute the sound, it won't go right down to the left of the scale so at minimum level while in a call I can just about hear the callers voice.

In Settings>Sound>Volumes you can adjust the music/media level, the ringtone/notification level and the alarm level but you cannot see or adjust the 'in call' audio level. So the only way to adjust the in call sound is during a call using the volume rocker buttons. Unless I've missed something?

That's in Kitkat with latest update.

    Thanks to Tony5101 and spannerzone!

I've just arranged to be called, and when I keep pressing the top end of the volume control rocker switch, suddenly I can hear the person at the other end! I had hunted through everywhere which says Settings, and not found a call volume setting.

Technology can be so frustrating, so it's extremely useful when someone who knows what they're doing can help!

It does seem odd that there isn't a call volume setting in amongst the other volume settings.
