Plusnet problems

Options
Hi All. Been with PlusNet broadband and phone for several years now and have had no problems at all. However, since the storms here in Cornwall the service has been terrible with the internet dropping out completely and today I did a speed check and it was down to less than 1 m/b!! Sometimes the internet light goes red then comes on in a few mins. The router is a Thompson - could it be that playing up. I shall have a good look this weekend, but has anyone else suffered since the storms? What else can I check before I call PlusNet?

Are you served by overhead telephone lines? A LOT of overhead lines will have been damaged by the effects of the wind causing the lines to rub against branches, and pole connections to degrade.
Or alternatively, if served by underground cables it could be that inspection chambers have flooded and not drained properly causing electrical issues.
Either way, first check to see if your phone line is noisy -plug a corded handset into the master socket (even better, test socket if you have one, which is situated behind the master socket and accessed by removing two small screws in the lower half of the socket).
Dial 17070 and use option 2 for "quiet line test". If you hear noise (ie pops, whistles, loud hissing) then report it as a line fault to Plusnet. They will probably ask you to do this, if you phone them about the poor broadband speed, before anything else.

Update:- PlusNet informed us that there was a fault on the line between the exchange and the house. Today, an engineer called and checked everything out, -no problems on the line! The speed is appalling less than 1/2 Mbt download. I asked the engineer what the problem could be and he just said "..must be the broadband". can anyone shed any light on the problem? I will ring plusnet again tonight and see what they have to say.

If you've had a number of disconnections your line profile could be wrong, more often than not when the BT profile updates Plusnet's doesn't so you end up with awful speeds despite a good sync rate.

Get them to check the profiles match on BT's and Plusnet's side.

Still dropping connections and awful speed. Rang PlusNet today and they are now sending a "Broadband" engineer to check things out. I've done everything that I can think of except replacing the router. I am desperate to get this sorted.Does anyone known how I can check the router - a Thompson by the way.
