Morning all, always read but don't post as I don't feel I have anything of great interest to add, but today my husband retires, so that's quite exciting. Although I am if course looking forward to it, have had the house to myself for four and a half days a week for the last 17 months and I like my 'me' time.

We won't spend our time in each other's pockets and bought a caravan last year, so hope for trips away in that. It will be a bit tight money wise but we will cope, after all, I am in the right place here on the OS board!

Hugs to those who need them,I truly realise that my concerns compared to some of those pale into insignificance.

    Morning All!

I have already been and done my food shopping (always like to go early as can't stand the bustling later on). All unpacked, breakfast had and after a quick peek on here will be starting the paperwork I need to do for today!

Was raining quite heavy earlier and rather windy but seems to of blown over, and is just cold and a little over cast. Looks like the sun is beginning to peak through the clouds though so hopefully spreading to where you all are to.

TTFTM - I think some basic life skills need teaching in schools. Budgeting/home cooking not just cakes/basic sewing ect. I would of loved to have learned that from a younger age.

Forever Saving - best of luck with ringing the school hope you manage to change it. I think teachers forget common sense and what can be best for students sometimes.

RedRuby - I think I would cry!! I hope what they are eating is very very tasty!!

Carolbee - Happy retirement day for your husband.

Right time to set to with my paperwork.

Happy Thursday everyone, almost the weekend :j
Christmas is the most magical time of the year :santa2:

    Morning all,

Carolbee don't be put off posting just because you've got nothing interesting to add to the thread. I rarely have anything interesting to add but it doesn't stop me posting my drivel. :D Sometimes I just post my list of jobs. Doing that motivates me to get through them as quick as possible.

Well last night was a laugh I must say with reference to the meal that was supposedly being cooked for me by hubbys site foreman. I'll explain why.

I'd been given instructions that I was to prepare the vegetables beforehand, which was no problem. I got a text at 4.30 by Mr T to start off the roast potatoes. No problems there as the roasts usually take a while to cook when you don't rely on frozen. Hubby normally gets home from work around 6.15 so I parboiled the potatoes and stuck them in the oven around 5.30. By 6.30 they hadn't turned up and the roasts were cooked. I turned off the oven. Looking at the vegetables that were sitting in the pan, I thought I'd put them on low. Just to save a bit of time as I could see us eating at 8pm by this time. Even at low the men hadn't turned up by the time they were cooked. Now looking at the onions and mushrooms that had been sliced and the cooked vegetables, I thought I'd save a bit of time by saut!ing them on a low heat.

By the time the men turned up it was around 7pm and all but the steak that needed around 5 minutes cooking each side, the meal was cooked. So as soon as the men walked in I went and sat in the living room thinking either Mr T or hubby would take over. "Oh well done" Mr T said "you've got the food in hand". 15 minutes later, both Mr T and hubby walked into the kitchen a few times, neither of them bothering to start on cooking the steak and the meal was cooked so I went back into the kitchen and cooked the steak and mashed the potatoes with the grated cheese.

After that a glass of red wine was pushed into my hands and I'm regretting it this morning.

Quote of the evening from Mr T to Hubby.... "where's the dishwasher?" His reply was "that's the wife".:D

Oh and yes, I washed up afterwards.

Worked out pretty well I must say, the meal was cooked perfectly considering i'm a rubbish cook, though I did escape for a while upstairs whilst the men talked shop. I had three of them ('Youngest' had joined in at this point) and I was having to stifle the yawns.

ps I think I was set up :rotfl:

    Hi everyone,

Good luck on DH's retirement Carolbee. I hope you have success with the school FS, I'm so glad my two are out of education.

I had an awful day yesterday and slept on and off but feel a bit better today, which is just as well because I want to make a pork and broccoli and a veg lasagne for DD to take with her to Yorkshire. I will also make a few cakes I think.

Tru, I struggle with fabric selection for my patchwork, although I am getting better at it. At the moment I am making a quilt with 100 6" patches, all different, which hopefully will have a rainbow effect when it's finished. I've completed 30odd so far and apart from 2 which I think are a bit dodgy I'm quite pleased.

    Have a good day everyone.

Judi, we must have cross-posted. I wouldn't have minded about the cooking but if DH had made the washing up crack (and then not done the said washing up) he would have been very sorry for himself after his friend had left.

    Morning All

The wind seems to have died down for the moment but it's still wet! Yesterday was quite nice in parts, even saw the sunshine.

Seemed to spend yesterday chasing my tail both at work and at home and I think today is going to be the same. Going to see a live showing of war horse tonight at a cinema, quite looking forward to it.

Washing up to date and the house is reasonably tidy. I was going to strip some wallpaper yesterday but by the time I had caught up with everything and everyone it was 8.45 so didn't fancy starting then.

Used my new halogen oven, I think it will be quite good when I get the hang of it!

Hope you all have a good day, take care. XX

I'm going to see War Horse tonight too at our local cinema. I bought my mum a ticket for her Xmas present and included a 'promise' from youngest DD that she will granddad-sit for her. My mum and I hardly ever go out together because if she wants to go somewhere, then I go in with my dad, so it will be really nice. Looking forward to the show too - it's the first time I've been to one of these live broadcasts. Don't know if it can better Billy Elliot - youngest DD and I went to see it in London in the holidays and thought it was brilliant.
  • Morning all,

The sun has popped out although I don't expect it to last, the sky looks like it has some more rain left.

Took DH's car out for a drive this morning to get used to see what it is like and I have to say it is quite nice, so much so that I will be taking it to work at lunchtime :)

Foreversaving - Good Luck with the school. We had the same problem with DS2, we were told if he dropped a subject he wouldn't be allowed back to follow the others through to A2 level.

Judi - I'm glad it all worked out ok, but I'd be a bit miffed.

    Hello everyone

My whinge of the day is getting a parking ticket. Mum’s opened it for me and says it is £110 with no mention of 50% reduction if you pay it within a certain number of days. It’s from December, so seems like it either took a long time getting to me, or someone ripped it off my windscreen when the traffic warden put it there. So annoying as it wasn’t as if I was parked on yellows or anything, but just had my wheel up on the kerb. I remember the day. It was raining, the space was tiny and I would have moved it straightaway, but it was outside my mum’s house and she lives on a bus route, so decided to leave it for an hour until traffic calmed down. Grrr! Ranting has made me feel a little better, thank you!

Dinner last night was mini toads in the hole. I thought they were lovely, but girls didn’t eat them (they apparently “stole” six sausages which were for my and my mum’s dinner before mum could make them into Toads).

Supposed to have the day off tomorrow, but looks like I may be working in the morning now (suppose that will go a little way towards my parking ticket, grrr again!).

CAROLBEE – congrats to your husband. Retirement eh? I don’t think I’d know what to do with myself.

JUDI – oh me gosh, after all that!! If they’d wanted you to cook, why didn’t they just ask?!

I really wish I could get back into a hobby. I literally sit in my bedroom once the girls have gone to bed and either watch the soaps or read a book. Nothing else. How boring eh? I used to knit, but never actually finished anything.

What goes round in a mans head I do not know (apart from cars, bikes and sex). In fairness, ive cooked a few meals for hubbys work mates before and I know he'd have just told me he was inviting someone round for dinner cause he's done it before.

Mr T, just wanted to come and meet the wife behind the husband, I say that because I tried to talk them into going out one of the evenings to a pub or something after work.
