    Many thanks. Downloaded Open Office and it's working fine. Also tried Excel Viewer. It opened the file but I couldn't see any means of saving it. No save or file button.

    That's because it is only a viewer - as it says on the tin. ;)

  • And with OpenOffice you can save it as a .xls as well as the OpenOffice ODF formats.

    I would support that answer for the following reasons:

    1. You already have a copy of Excel so there is no cost involved and it ensures (almost) full compatibility.

    2. Open Office is good and free but does have limitations such as if a spreadsheet has programming code within it to do special functions or programs that run on opening etc. i.e. automation. AFAIK these are not supported by OO.

    If you were starting from scratch it might well be different.....
