Help - PC Won't Connect to Router (BT) SOLVED

Hi, hope somebody can help .... else I'll have to find out how to contact BT
I have upgraded my internet service with BT from 10GB/month to 20GB/month. This involved being connected to fibre optic I think - and required a new router.
System/everything working well, engineer turned up this morning and fitted it all up - now PC (XP Pro) won't connect to the router.
Systray shows red icon. No error message when I enter the password and try to connect. Choose Wireless Network says this is Security-enabled wireless network (WPA2)
In the View Wireless Networks there's another one there, no idea what it is/whose, but it says BTWifi-with-FON - unsecured wireless network - if I try to connect to that by choosing it and clicking connect, then the icon in systray goes GREEN. It doesn't connect to the Internet, that's a different issue, but the icon goes GREEN and for my own network it stays RED.
When I enter my password to connect it shows the dialogue box and says "Please wait while Windows connects to the ... network. Waiting for the network." It eventually then just goes back to displaying the Choose a Wireless Network list and it's not connected; clicking the network offers me the connect button; systray icon still RED.
I am on my laptop (Vista) and that connected perfectly first time.
I have tried a few times: rebooting the PC and rebooting the router.
Any clues?

Compare the network settings between the two PCs is the way to do it, methodically check each setting until you see a difference. If there isn't one, other option is that the WiFi interface in the PC is causing the problem with the new router.0

is the pc up to Service Pack 3? Does the wifi card/adapter use WPA2? Some older ones won't. Check these first, then if all good, go into the wifi connection properties, ,delete all existng saved wifi networks you don't need along with the new one, then try to connect again.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

No idea - I've had it a few years, it's a Belkin wireless card I fitted into the slot when I first bought wireless. It says Belkin Wireless Network Utility, version 3.30.15.0 Date Jul 17 2003
Board V1799 D7000 Rev 4.6
Chipset BCM4306 / BCM2050
Driver Version 3.30.15.0
Driver Date 7-17-2003
Router is: BT Home Hub 5
In the booklet they mention a fast dongle you can buy .... looks like I might have to do that
I have a three/mobile dongle..... might see if that produces a miracle and shows me what I want on a list.... bit of a long shot. Or I've got an O2 dongle that I know has lists of networks.... might try those0 -

Are you entering the password required for the new router? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I have used the ethernet cable to connect and downloaded their setup software. I ran that for a BT Home Hub Check and it said "unfortunately we have detected that your BT Home Hub or 3rd Party Device is not compatible with the BT Home Hub Check .... so that might be giving a clue.
Just installing the O2 connection software/dongle to try that.0 -

You do not need to install any BT software and installing the O2 connection manager is pointless! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
That is almost working. A list comes up on that dongle, asking me what to connect to, it's not letting me in, saying Connection Failure and whittering on about being unable to connect etc.... so I'm going through all the security options to try to get the right mix..... current confidence: 50/500

Looks like the all singing, all dancing, new dongle they recommend won't work either. It says Windows 7, windows 8, Vista. My PC is XP Pro0
