All I can say it's a long process. You need to do the leg work to show them the difference. That's what got my hubby.
If you say facts and figures it will probably bore the socks off her. Tell her that you both can have something good for the house if you make small changes you may spark interest.

Pick your time not when she is doing chores, as its boring finance to go with a boring job. If you go out for a walk try it then as its the times couples reflect and chat. Or it may just be us.:D

I like finance but most people yawn.

    Good luck

lol Ok I'll give it a bit of time, although patience isn't my greatest quality!!
Its a bit of a running joke with my friends and family that I don't like spending money and I'm always looking for ways to save, or better interest rates etc so I know i'll start getting frustrated if I don't get even a half hearted response!

Cracking weekend so far.... (Sarcastic tone of voice) Washing machines broke (Fills with water but does nothing else with it, replacement purchased for £200), Combi boilers being temperamental with the hot water (works when it wants), And my belt broke (nothing to do with my expanding waistline before anyone suggests it)
Still not had the talk about money with the OH and shes generally been in a bad mood most of the weekend so I'm unsure whether its even going to happen (or rather whether its worth risking my life to broach the subject)

    Roll on Monday...

I had £1300 in an account that was opened by the mortgage company when I first took out the mortgage, I had put some money in from extra work I had done but didn't really know what to do with it, but I just transferred it to the mortgage so by tomorrow/ Tuesday my mortgage should be below £60k :-) That will make me feel much better!

While I'm riding the OP high (!) I'd better make a plan for the week and put it on here to give myself a bit of pressure to actually do it.

    1. Make a financial plan for 2014 and commit it to here so I have a benchmark I can measure my success, or lack there of!
    2. Put the box of stuff I have on eb*y
    3. Sign up to, and send off stuff to music m*gpie
    4. Speak to my brother and attempt to get back £500 he owes me.
    5. Speak to sister and attempt to find a 'long term' payment plan by standing order for paying me back £600 owed to me.
    6. Cash Cheque for nearly £800 from old company share scheme
    7. Try out Freeview box (arrived yesterday) and if all works ok, Contact Sky and cancel the TV.
    8. Disconnect old Washing machine Monday night. Fit new one when it arrives on Tuesday.
    9. Contact mortgage advisor and explain plan for upcoming months for his advice on best plan of attack.
That'll do for one week! :T

Good luck with the plan, seems like you are taking a lot of positive steps. :)

Shame about your washing machine, could have been a simple fix like replacing the carbon motor brushes may have been a £10 fix.

I know, the washing machine could have been pretty simple but its been a bit of a catalogue of problems with it recently and I don't think I can put off replacing it much longer!

You seem to be the local loan shark ;) My mum is ours, I am one of 5 and can honestly I am the ONLY one of us that has NEVER borrowed from her even when she offered. I use the term borrowed quite loosely mind as they never seem to pay her back and it really gets my back up!! and not just hundreds either.

Good luck with the freeview, there are plenty of channels on there. I didnt really miss much when I switched a few years ago.

As for your partner, show her the long term goal. The great holidays you can have when you are mortgage free etc. My ex was so carp with money (still is!) it was like a weight off my shoulder when I didnt have to deal with his credit cards. But there was no way he would have agreed to OP, he'd rather spend it and some! I think a lot of people are like that and dont understand our goals the same as we do. My work colleagues especially think I am mad for doing it but I will be the one laughing when its all done. I hope she feels the same as you and you can both work at it together. Think mine would be long gone if I had a partner helping.

    Thanks Newgirly

Yea my brother and sister are very rarely not owing me money, I get it back and generally 2 or 3 months later they are asking for more, and its always a long journey getting it back off them!

will update properly on 'the talk' and other stuff probably tomorrow when I have a bit more time. I'm trying to post as regularly as possible so I keep it up!
