Financial Write Off Cars

My car was classed as financial write off after an accident a few weeks ago and I have bought it back and it has been repaired. All the damage was superficial to the front of the car.

Does the car need an MOT before I can drive it again? The current MOT is valid until May but is this void now the car has been classed as a financial write off?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The car was declared a financial write off by a salvage company working on behalf of my insurance company

No the MOT will still be valid. The question you need to ask is the car roadworthy? If you are unsure it might pay to have it MOT'd.

    Cat C or Cat D?

If it's Cat D, then - no - you need do no more.
If it's Cat C, then you need the car to go through a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) before you'll get the V5C re-issued or be able to retax it.

Because a CatC/CatD/non-write-off repair is purely an economic decision, the MOT's unaffected.

How do I find out the category?

I'm satisfied the car is roadworthy, it's just the legality of whether I need to put the car through a new MOT

    Thanks

you need to speak to the insurance company that wrote the car off and find out what the current status of the car is

have they declared it cat d, if it is cat D then current MOT and tax are ok no need to have the car inspected

you need to inform your insurance company as some wont insure a cat D car and also if you ever sell the car you must clearly state that it is cat D and this will heve an impact on the ability to sell and the price you the will get for the car n

C or D doesn't affect existing MOT or tax which remain valid until normal expiry.

C does need VIC before you can get a new V5 (if you don't have the old one), similarly, you won't get tax reminders but can still tax it at the post office assuming you still have the old V5.

There are a couple of insurers that won't cover write offs and say so in the proposal assumptions.

Most insurers don't care but, as always, read all the T&C/assumptions, answer the questions truthfully and don't don't confuse matters by volunteering anything they don't ask about.

As a private rather than business seller you need to be honest in your description and answers you give to any questions you are asked but, again, you don't need to volunteer anything more. Basically you can keep quiet about the write off status unless asked when you must answer truthfully

    Many thanks for your replies.

I've just ran a vehicle enquiry on the direct.gov.uk website and a VIC is required. I'm guessing this means my car is category C but I will confirm this with the insurance company tomorrow.

Is the VIC a legal requirement? Can I still tax the vehicle without it going through a VIC check?
