Please read the job advert carefully !

Just a tip I feel I must share with those of you looking for work from an employers point of view.
I posted a job advert online requesting CV's to be sent along with a covering letter.
In less than 6 hours I have had 32 responses but only 4 have included any kind of covering letter as requested.
A covering letter is a really good way of getting some background information on the candidate and why they could be suitable for the job.
From the point of view of someone who will be going through huge numbers of applications quite simply my first impression is 28 people have failed to follow a simple command and are never ever going to be considered for the post.
It might sound like stating the obvious to some but it also might help someone.

I really think you are pointing out the obvious here.

I have seen many adverts with bad spelling and mistakes so it works both ways and the recruiting companies have the cheek to put 'attention to detail' in their adverts :)

  • I was at a training course a few weeks ago at Newcastle College, and I was surprised at just how many people thought that a covering letter consisted off 'here is my CV'.

I look at it as the difference between being a statistical figure via a CV and a personal acknowledgement via the covering letter.

In any job application, I would much prefer to be judged on my personality as well as my qualifications.

I imagine any employer looking to recruit, would factor an array of qualified potentials, but without any sort of personal input like a covering letter, all they would have on a personal level is a capability to do the job.

Even Gary Glitter is capable of being a Father Christmas in a store, I am not sure he would be a suitable candidate, regardless of his capability to do the job.

Perhaps some of them applied purely to satisfy their adviser.
I have 2 cv's and 4 covering letters on UJM. 1 cv and 1 covering letter are deliberately littered with grammatical and spelling errors and the rest are highly polished and professional.
The badly-writen ones get used for jobs below what I need to earn to survive & the polished ones for the jobs that meet my earnings requirements to actually live.

I do hope that you have acknowledged receipt of those with the covering letter... my pet hate from employers is going through the time of tailoring my CV to the job description, adding a covering letter then hearing nothing back from them unless I phone up. Oh, to which the standard reply these days seems to be 'sorry, we don't acknowledge receipt of CVs/applications and I can't tell you if we received it'. Not having a go at you Tabatha, but it does work both ways round, you might find that those 28 people are sick and tired of sending off CVs and letters and never hearing anything back, even when they call to find out what is happening.

Possibly. But 28 out of 32 missed the obvious !
